What Text Messaging App?

I tried Chomp at first and liked it (except for the ads) until a friend told me about Handcent and have been using it ever since. I like the fact that it has a lot more options, you can send greetings from the app and they just updated it to control the flashing of your LED.

I wanted to stick with the stock but I didnt want my messages shown on the locked screen and if I disabled that I got nothing.

I tried ChompSMS, but I really hate the bubbles. I chose Handcent because I dont have to use bubbles and there are no ads.

I un-installed handcent last week and my battery life has been phenomenal since. Just put on the charger at 4% after 40 hours. I didn't make any other changes. If in fact it was the handcent taking some battery life ill stick with stock.
I really want to stick with Stock as well, it just works for me. But Handcent is very nice. I uninstall it all the time. It just depends on how I feel that day. And Im usually trying to preserve space anyway. So I mite uninstall it rite now.

Can you only show mobile numbers in the stock messaging app? All of those numbers are annoying. Thats really the problem I have with stock.

i liked the Stock for its "cleaniness" but hated the fact that it didn't alert me while on the phone. That really drove me nutts lol. So I downloaded Handcent. I looove it. I love the fact that its so customizable.

I use the Google Voice one most of the time but when I send an MMS I use the stock one. The Google Voice one is nice to me and works perfectly....

+1, text, voicemail all in one app! Once they get MMS setup google voice hands down.

also for me working where cell phones are not allowed, I'm still connected to everyone via the google voice website.

if you use one of the text app can you still keep your key board, i have the droid x key board and i love it. will it stay? or do they come with custom key boards?

Are you able to use the microphone with Handcent? I talk to text v. typing and like it so much better but hate that texts show up on the lock screen.

I have most of the same likes and dislikes as many people here.
I started using handcent, and i really like the customization of it. I just dont like how it has flaws and its not as smooth as the stock app. You can tell it is a 'third party app' by looking at it.

I love the stock app and how smooth it is but wish you could customize more things, like the font size, bubbles, notifications, lock screen notification etc.
Hopefully they will update it soon.

Also, where in the settings can I have it where when I receive a text, it is not on the screen when i unlock the phone as the stock messaging app is? Sometimes I just want to view the texts when I want, not have them sitting there right away.
Sorry, just returned to this thread :) If you didn't already find it, it's under "Quick Reply and Compose" -- uncheck the first two boxes ("Locked Screen" and "Home Screen/Apps"). This was something in a recent update that was set on by default, because it only recently started happening. Doesn't bother me having my texts visible (I have the big widget on my lock screen), just hated having to dismiss something unnecessarily.

I keep going back and forth between chomps and handcent. I like chomps, but pics come thry easier with handcent. I like handcent, but after i set up all the bubbles texts still come thru normal way...can i switch to only seeing bubble text all the time, or do I only see when I look at history?
