Help What to do first??

My long anticipated DInc is to arrive tomorrow and I am a complete newbie to android and all the lingo! I am coming over from a BB Curve. So my question is...what do I need to do first? Teach me oh teach me!

Astro file manager - To explore the root of your memory card
Beautiful Widgets - Weather and Clock Widgets that's awesome
Rindroid - To make your own ringtones from your music on the phone
Places and Directories by Google - To find anything you want

Also go to the market and check out the apps that have the best rating and check the comments of other users of this apps.

Also this phone comes with 50+ Widgets from HTC and Googles, so have fun.

Charge it for 6-8 hours before you use it off a charger.

Next, throw a screen protector and a case on that baby, because there are just way too many threads around here about scratched and shattered screens to risk ruining such a beautiful device.

Then, take off auto-brightness and lower brightness to around 30%. Turn off or decrease how often auto sync occurs for things you don't use regularly (Facebook, twitter, etc).

Don't install a task killer unless you find it necessary.

Go app crazy.

And enjoy.
 
Might not be the best idea for someone to use task killer with little to no knowledge of what he/she is doing. Isnt it my understanding that Android kills apps on its own?

Why is it a bad idea to use Task Killer? What can you do wrong? I went to a Verizon store yesterday and the tech installed it on my phone.

It's unnecessary. From what I've read on here, Android OS shuts down the apps on its own. I'm not exactly sure what exactly you can do wrong by using task killer, but I remember it was suggested time and time again on here NOT to use it. Hopefully someone with some better knowledge can give a better explanation other then me saying just dont use it.
 
Skip the task killer and go for System Panel. With SP you'll be able to see what apps are active and what apps are cached. Cached apps aren't running and as such aren't using any of the processor or the battery. Just leave them running. If your phone needs more memory for something Android will close the apps it needs to get that memory. System Panel also gives you the ability to close runaway apps when the occasional need arises.
 
Sigh.. don't get a task killer.

I'm tired of posting the same thing in every thread. Google around for how Android handles process management. Task killers are essentially useless (it's ok to have one around if a thread hangs or something, but for the most part, you won't need it). Don't get in the habit of using these apps that "auto kill" apps. It's not necessary.

That said, I'd get a Google account, install google sync on your berry, and have it sync your calendar and contacts. That way that'll sync back down to your droid as soon as you plug in your google account info (that's where your calendar and contacts will be stored, so choose your account name wisely if it matters to you!)

Other than that, check out Google Goggles, Proxoid if you want to tether with a laptop (for free), meebo IM, Movies (flixster), pandora, shopsavvy, Barcode Scanner, Shazam, Gmail Unread Count if you have multiple gmail boxes and want to keep them that way on your home screen (a la blackberries). That's all I can think of right now. Sorry for the lack of links, I'm incredibly lazy and tired at the moment (pun intended).
 
I come from a Blackberry Curve also (my first smart phone) and I have some questions... I hope it is ok to highjack your thead.

This may seem like a stupid question but how do you shut down the browser when you are done surfing?

Can you set the phone to auto turn off at night and then back on in the morning like the Blackberry?

Is there an app like Blackberry App World that you can download for the DI?

I have read that there is some problems making sure apps get downloaded to the right place (internal vs sd card). How do I download apps to make sure they are on the card and work right?
