Newbie
so i have been jumping from different forums to learn how to do certain things and how to spruce up my inspire and i am still stuck. i look at the screen shots of different inspires and feel like i am truly missing out on the android experience. now, i have not rooted my device. i have started to download apps that i think are compatible to the apps i had on the bb. i am trying to set the device up as close as possible. please help me to get the most out of my android experience. how important is htc sense?

apps that i used on bb frequently:

bbnotepad
weatherbug
smiley pack
fancy characters
ringtone remix
crackberry launcher
memo pad
task
radio companion
docs to go (edit, view, create)

i have found replacements for some of the other apps that i use. Any help is appreciated.

had inspire for a couple of months and still feel like its brand new

You've run up against the principle reason that people root their phones - the freedom to change things around to suit their own tastes. The screen shots that you mention probably show the desktops of people who have custom roms, and/or themed roms installed. If you definitely *don't* want to root your phone, why not consider installing ADW Launcher (get the paid version, it has more options), which allows you to make all kinds of changes to the way your phone looks. There are many themes available for ADW, both free and paid, and they make quite a difference.

thanks for the reply. i will check out ADW and see what it is about. i am not sure i want to root my phone just yet or not. the process sounds scary. thanks again

Hey again. I completely forgot to mention launchers. This will be a huge part of your customization. If you don't know already, it replaces the stock home with a custom one. These 3rd party launchers often have more customization options. The most popular are ADW (that ultradroid mentioned) and LauncherPro. There many others though.

is there a section on here that talks about launchers and which one to download or do i need to go to the market? thanks again. i am ready to customize my phone now, but have no clue on where to start

Go to the market and search for these
Launcherpro
Adw
Go launcher
Launcher 7

These should all have free versions for you to try. I ended up settling on launcher pro plus ($3) I liked the scrollable dock at the bottom and the widgets were nice (only available in the paid version) they have started to put skins for the widgets on the market.

Personally I think they are way more customizable. Launcherpro has a sense like feel too it, there is even a sense skin offered in the market now for the widgets. And I'm not sure about adw or go but launcherpro offers a hidden app draw. So for those that don't want to root or look at the att bloatware you can place it in this hidden draw and never see it. I also like the scrollable dock bar versus the one you are stuck with using sense.

I forgot to mention if you use another launcher you should also get home switcher for froyo this will allow you to go back to sense easily

Maybe i should have asked this question first, are launchers the same as themes? I have not downloaded a launcher yet but most likely will today. Still can't make up my mind.

No the themes go with the launcher to give the launcher a different look with maybe different icons and color schemes. So if you use adw you can then search for adw themes. That launcher has a lot of themes. Launcherpro doesn't really have themes but instead now offers skins for the widgets and you only get the widgets in the paid version of launcherpro
