Help What type of screen does the Thunderbolt have?

It's Super LCD, it was mentioned multiple times during the Verizon press event at CES, and elsewhere. It isn't on the spec list for some reason, although technically Super LCD is a form of TFT LCD.

Fair enough. That would probably explain it.

Super LCD is nowhere near as nice as a Super Amoled! But I doubt HTC wanted to take any risks of using Amoled or Super Amoled after the problems with keeping up with demand after the incredible screen fiasco.

Although for some of us who can see the pentile matrix in super amoled, we prefer the sharpness of SLCD. Apparently Samsung got rid of that in Super Amoled + which I have yet to see.

Go look at a newer Incredible screen it has a SLCD it will look very similar to that

I heard this was false, and that at least for the D Inc they never stopped putting the regular AMOLEDs in them. I could be wrong, but last time I searched, I found the original rumors they were going to switch, but then found several cited and more concrete articles that later said future HTCs were going to be SuperLCD, but that the rumors were false. Been a while since I searched so I could be wrong.

Any Incredibles that are purchased now are all going to be SLCD . There was a time where it was false but they finally made the switch I believe a couple months ago

I believe all Incredibles were switched to SLCD back in September, Around the same time as the Fascinate release!

I'm not sure when the switched to SLCD but I know they did . There are people who had trouble running certain roms on the SLCD version of the Incredible

Thanks for the info. I was just behind the times, as usual. :p

While I prefer SuperAMOLED to SLCD (and only slightly so) I don't think AMOLED is superior to SLCD. I've only used the original Incredibles with their AMOLED screens, but I like the screen better on the Droid X and the Samsung Fascinate noticeably better than the AMOLED on the original incredible. Even though AMOLED is good, SuperAMOLED still noticeably beats it in contrast and viewing angles, and you get some of the negatives of having an AMOLED based display. SuperAMOLED has these same negatives, such as people being able to see that pentapixel effect, or whatever it's called, but you also get insane contrast, viewing angles, improved battery life over AMOLED, and an even thinner screen with less glass between your eyes and the image. With SLCD you don't get the black levels or viewing angles, but you get a noticeable improvement to sharpness in text, and depending on your usage and/or browsing habits, possibly a boost in battery life. Text definitely looks better.

SuperAmoled BLOWS away SLCD and AMOLED IMO ... I loved the screen on my Fascinate . But I still really like the Incredible screen I haven't seen one with SLCD but just regular AMOLED is very nice compared to the EVO LCD which is not great but definetly not horrible. I'm not too worried about disliking this screen on the TB but I am looking forward to better outdoor viewing AMOLED is awful in direct sunlight

Yep, SLCD is still the king for text and lots of reading, but you're right about sunlight. I never struggle to read my Fascinate, no matter how bright it is outside. It's so nice to have that SuperLCD outside.

And on my eReader app, I have it set to night mode. Because only the text is white, it minimizes greatly any eye strain, AND makes the thing literally sip battery. I read for 3 hours straight once, and took a minimal hit to my battery. I think it was something ridiculously low, like 7% if memory serves....

Very nice , it's funny when they first talked about this phone I got really excited about it then when it was officially annouced at CES I got very down on it and as more and more information and videos have come around about the phone I get more and more pumped about getting it this month and then upgrading to hopefully a Dual Core HTC with a Android OS that works with those processors perfectly at the end of the year

I would considers Apple's retina display to be the King of text and reading.

You're right, it's even a little better than SLCD. I was just confining my comparisons to android phones for the moment, but you are correct. I think these new quarter HD beasts are going to give it a run for the money with their ridiculous sharpness, though, such as the Atrix, Bionic, and LG if they ever come out with an actual powerful phone on an actual US network...

I agree with chitown...Super Amo is where it's at IMO! However, not every phone can have a kick ass display like Samsung puts out, not right this minute anyway. But in due time, I think it'll become mainstream for just about all phone makers to throw SuperAmo or better into they're devices. By this time next year I doubt high end phones will be getting released with anything less.

Anyone actually seen LG's fabled NOVA displays in person yet? I've read reports saying even more brightness, contrast, and efficiency than SuperAMOLED. I really wish LG were faster at this smartphone stuff. They were always a leader in flip phones and full keyboard phones. What the heck happened to them with smartphones? How could they let themselves get left in the dust like this? Yeah, they have some decent phones, but nothing cutting edge out on any network right now that I know of.
