Help Whats a good reason to Keep "enable always on mobile data"

I know that I'm in a Incredible forum (I have a Desire), but I came here by accident... that is, by google search, trying to find out what's "always on mobile data".

Here's what I have noticed: disabling "always on mobile data" stopped me from receiving emails from an exchange server. I scheduled my Desire to get emails every 4 hours, but this only works with "always on mobile data" enabled. But Gmail push will still work, no matter if "always on mobile data" is enabled or disabled.
Also, the weather indicator on HTC clock widget will not be updated automatically if "always on mobile data" is disabled. It's only updated when I enter the weather application.

I the the key is how do you use your phone?

Do you need notifications on emails? If so then you will need it on...

If you only need instant notifications on SMS and do not use other messaging or data related apps you can easily leave it off. The phone will grab and sync everything when it wakes up. So far I have had no issues, but like I said depends on how you use the phone.

good way to explain it.

The key is most everything will be received when it wakes up. but to wake it up most times that means the user has to turn the phone on. it wont do it on its on normally

I don't understand this concept at all. Most smart people buy a smart phone to utilize it's features. One key feature being instant email. Why someone would want to turn off a data connection on a smart phone is mind baffling.

If you're that concerned about battery life, go get a better battery. Too many wanna-bees own this phone.......

Logic fail.

Just because you don't need instant email notification doesn't mean you'd never like to check your email or browse the web while not sitting in front of your computer. It doesn't mean you wouldn't like to stream music or get navigation directions. It doesn't mean you wouldn't use any or all of the myriad other features. It just means you don't need one of them.

If your sole purpose in having this phone is instant email notification, then you made a poor choice and paid way too much for your phone. If you chose this phone because of all the other things it can do besides tell you when you get an email, then you've answered your own question.

I think I drank too much coffee this morning. I don't understand what you are saying ^ too many negatives. If you can restate it that would be great.

That I agree with, BB is the best for email alone. (I actually miss my BB email accounts but not enough)

With this setting off your weather will still update, under accounts and sync is the settings to sync gmail AND weather separate from the always on setting

I think hes saying that these phones have alot of features, and using it to check email whenever you turn it on (if mobile data always on is not enabled) is a different approach than having mobile data always on and having the phone alert you when a new email comes in.

Using it to check email away from the computer is still a "valid" use of the phone that doesnt require "mobile data always on"

Make any more sense?

Edit:

Just to clarify a little more.

Its not turning off the data connection, its just enabling the "always on" setting. Theres a big difference.

Yes, that makes more sense. I need always on because I need email instantly and not 5 minutes later when I decide to turn on my phone. I guess the question is how much more battery does always on actually use? I mean, what's the harm or downside?

I dont mind it that much for email, but for programs like pandora or streamfurious, the connection will time out after a couple of songs on pandora, or 5 minutes, requiring you to turn on the phone so it resumes again. That gets pretty annoying.

I'm experimenting with slacker radio, which allows radio caching in premium version, and I gotta say, its pretty good. Especially with a good portion of my time being going in and out of subways, its perfect for that. Might just be worth paying for the subscription, which would in a roundabout way, solve my conundrum.

Ah, a city boy. :) But come on, you have a nano for the subways, right? I use subscription Pandora and haven't been on the subway for a little while, but I assume that it doesn't have caching. I'm actually heading to the city on Friday for a week, back and forth between NJ.

What I'm saying is that even though a person may not need instant email notification, they may still want to use all of the other "smart phone" features available.

True that I do have a nano, but I really dont think ive used it since I got the incredible. And not in love with the idea of starting to take it with me when i go places. For instance, last night and tonight again I'm going to the yanks game, was nice to have music for the 20 min ride when im not taking anything with me except my wallet and phone. I know the nano is minuscule but its just another thing to take.

Also, I havent downloaded (legally or illegally) new music in a while and dont feel like starting again. And putting in the effort to organize etc. Whats your reason for having subscription pandora vs any of the other services? It doesnt have caching, you're right.

Yanks need to step it up, Bosox just won 3 straight. Hope they and TB beat each other to a pulp. Were you at the Cano game? Yeah, carrying another thing is a pain, I agree, but it's so tiny.

As for Pandora paid, I don't like the commercials, I can skip unlimited amount of songs, and I love their play selection. I listen all the time so it was worth the $30 something I paid.

I see. So you were objecting to the suggestion that you needed instant email in order to claim use of the full functions of the phone. Leaving mobile on always would give you the instant email, but then again I can't stream radio with it off either. I haven't turned it off in quite some time, but doesn't Latitude use it too? Does it drain the battery significantly, or so much so that you turn it off to extend your time without charge?

I don't personally turn it off, I am a person who DOES want instant email notification. I also haven't really had any major problems with the battery either. I leave Wifi and GPS on all the time too and I never have a problem with the phone lasting a full day (I charge mine overnight every day).

I was merely responding to the suggestion above that it was pointless to have this phone if you would consider turning "always on mobile data" off.

Also, keep in mind that "always on mobile data" is not the same as turning off/on your mobile data connection entirely. It's a separate option within your settings. You certainly can still do things like stream music, use maps/latitude, etc with "always on mobile data" turned off. Your apps just won't be able to use data when your phone is sleeping.

I do know it's different, however, as soon as my screen turns off (sleeps) the streaming stops, which is I think 30 seconds these days. I'd rather have mobile data always than having my live wallpapers making monkey shines at me. Battery wise that is. Even with GPS I can hear the gal speaking with the screen off but only if mobile is always on. I tried it a long time ago with always unchecked but found it too limiting.

Well, I saw 2 ppl saying eBuddy can work with Always-on mobile DISABLED ... and another 2 saying it wont work. So, after some time, can anyone tell what the truth is? :)

Im testing myself, but my test have been unconclusive ... :)

ebuddy is a little different. it can sleep on its own so the messages would be delayed anyway. if i wouldnt touch the phone i would get logged out though not just delayed messages

If anyone is in need of their email instantly, they are using the wrong device. Computers are made for that, not phones.

Agreed. This is why I carry a laptop with me that has a 3G card in it. I walk around town with my laptop open and in my arms with my e-mail client open. Of course this means I can't do silly things like open doors or carry things, but who wants to do that? Why would I want my e-mail on a small device I can put in my pocket and that would actually notify me when I got e-mail so I could instantly respond? It's much better to walk around staring at an open laptop. This is what laptops are made for. Now if I can only stop walking into light poles, I'll be Ok.

It will increase your battery life, but it also essentially turns your phone into a dumb phone. When I turn it off on my phone, my weather widget doesn't update which is annoying, my gmail doesn't come, which is also annoying and my corporate mail does not work at all which I cannot have. I need my e-mail on my phone to work.

i'm really confused now. some of you say the htc weather/clock widget updates the weather when always on mobile is deselected, and some of you say it does not. mine is set to update every hour. will it or will it not update if my phone is sleeping? or, more to the point, when i wake my phone, will it then update automatically? because why the hell do i need it to update while the phone is sleeping? i just want it to update when i wake it up, without me having to do anything. basically, do the things that would not sync without "always on" sync when the phone wakes? that's i guess the real question. if they do that, then i'm good. i don't have email notifications on for every email i get.

allow me to be more succinct: if i have mobile always on deselected, and things do not sync when the phone is sleeping, will everything magically sync as soon as i wake the phone? thank you, and good night. :-)

When I turn mobile always off, my weather widget does not update. I can't speak for anyone else, but mine doesn't update.

mine updates with it off, so does my google mail, they are both under a different setting in accounts and sync....
