radio is firmware that come included with ota's. our great devs are able to pull the firmware out and make it flashable to upgrade without having to do accept an ota.
radios are the ones for your 3g, 4g, and cellular. updating your radios can make your 3g signal stronger as you might get more access to more towers which in turn may help out with battery life. now for me most of the radio updates that i have done i have seen minimal difference. but every phone is different. i have also seen where it can make things worse on a few occasions.
now one thing to know is that if you plan on updating your radios to make sure that :
1.you have a nandroid backup with wimax(4g) saved. i would also keep it on your pc as well. there is a small chance you can loose your wimax keys
2.make sure that you have plenty of battery life before flashing radios. one way to brick your phone is by flashing radios and either have the phone die or pulling the battery out while it is updating.
