Help What's taking up memory

[Edit: Never mind. Figured out how to account for all memory, via some other post that explains the bottom bar graph under Running Services (see bottom of this post). Not seeing a way to delete this post. Moderator, feel free to delete.]

I've got about 55 MB of free memory/RAM out of the 368 MB. But I can only account for about 230 of the 368 MB (~65%).

First, I totaled up all 25 Running Services (under Settings --> Applications)
= 169.2

Then checked each app's data (not even sure if data consumes memory)
= ~ 5 MB of data

Then did these three memory-freeing tasks:

  • Cleared cache (using SuperBox, then double-checked that all were cleared by looking at each app under Settings --> Applications --> Manage applications).
  • Killed all running tasks.
  • Tapped "Free Memory" command in SuperBox.

And I wind up with only 55 MB of free memory, per SuperBox (and sorta verified by a seat-of-the-pants feeling about lag). I re-checked Running Services, and though individual values have changed, overall MB total is about the same.

169 + 5 + 55 =~ 230 MB of the 368 MB of RAM. Can I find this other RAM and free it?

The missing 138 MB may be accounted for in the bar graph at the bottom of "Running Services" that I don't understand. It has segments of three colors: red, yellow, and green, and two statements:
"Other: 56MB in 6" [Starts in the red section, overlapping into yellow]
"Avail: 29MB + 55MB in 6" [Starts in yellow, running to right edge in green]

[Edit: The meaning of these numbers is given here, and means:

  • "Other: 56MB in 6" says that the device has 56MB of unavailable memory in 6 unkillable processes (that is, processes that are currently considered to be foreground and must be kept running)
  • "Avail: 29MB+55MB in 6" says that the device has 29MB of completely free (or likely used for unrequired caches) memory, and has another 55MB of available memory in 6 background processes it can kill at any time.

Looks like I gotta lose my native Email app, which is taking up 50+ MB for three e-mail accounts (yahoo, verizon, aol). Not good, that I'm sifting apps already after one week of ownership. Goodbye also to 3G Watchdog (5.2 MB), because Norton Utilities seems to be doing the same thing but without a widget.
