whats the best way to handle my galaxy nexus issues?

I'm experiencing many of the classic LTE Nexus issues:
1) I don't have data a lot of the time, I have strong 4G signal most of the time but I think my phone is constantly trying to switch to and from 3G to LTE and in doing so I have no data connection, very frustrating
2) battery life is unbelievably bad, moderate gaming (words with friends, draw something), texting, facebook/phandroid, and it is nearly dead in 4 hours
3) when making phone calls the person on the other side can either not hear me at all, or it is "gargled" sounding. Also when using speaker phone there are high pitch squeaks every 10 seconds or so that I can't explain....
4) OCCASIONALLY I am having random reboots, this issue happens scarcely so I cannot complain to much about it
5) minor but after I text someone, and I open the messaging app again it opens up a new text window for that same person as if I was texting them again, when I hit back it says saved as draft, weird...

There may be more that I can't think of right now, I got my phone on launch day after researching it for months.

I am wondering what my options are, should I use the 1 year manufactures warranty through Samsung, or use my insurance through Verizon that I pay monthly for? My main thing is that I don't want a refurbished replacement.

Thanks for the advice

I was having all of these issues, except for the third one. I have been running 4.0.4 ever since it leaked and it solved all of my problems.

If you can hang on for a couple more weeks (at least according to the rumors) see if the OTA fixes your issues when it drops.

If not, use your warranty if this qualifies. I haven't heard anyone say anything recently on whether or not Verizon is still sending out new replacements or if they have refurbs in stock now.

1)I think this is my same issue - does the signal strength indicator show Grey instead of Blue? the quick solution is toggling Airplane Mode on and off or a battery pull. (Like everyone else, I'm hoping the pending update fixes this issue. Also you can turn off 4G and set the phone to only use 3G, that might help.)
2)The screen being on is major, so is not being on wifi. If I am at home or a client where my phone can snag a wifi connection my battery life (assuming the screen is off) is amazing - it can go 20+ hours. Take away wifi, or start turning it on and using it and that goes downhill fast. I suggest a second battery that comes with the charging cradle - WELL worth the money. If you're out and about you can swap batteries like I do in seconds and be up and running, then if needed start the drained battery on the charger.
3)I don't think I've ever had that sort of issue; pretty sure I can't help there.
4)I think I've had 1 oe 2 random reboot since December's release date when I picked up the phone; hopefully the fix is in the next update or two. Since yours is rare like mine, I'd just chalk it up to an update issue unless it becomes frequent then it definitely warrants a return under warranty. (Hard reset first though.)
5)I don't know if I have had the exact issue, but I'll send texts and then sometimes either decide not to send and erase the text or the last sent text will magically reappear and it will show 'draft' next to that persons name no matter how many times I delete. I hope this gets fixed in the update - it's annoying but doesn't affect anything important.

So basically wait till the update and we'll both hope all of our issues are magically fixed!

Not to be elitist, condescending or one-minded, but once I experienced bugs I quickly unlocked the bootloader and starting running custom ROMs (I was gonna do this anyway) my ICS experience has been phenomenal. I have none of the above. I run AOKP B29, LEAN KERNEL 3.0., LEANTWEAKS 12.4, and the 4.0.4 Radios and Bootloader. Yes, it requires some desire and diligence to make all of that successful. And it is not for everyone. And if that still doesn't solve your problems, then unroot, relock and go back to stock. No harm, no foul.

Are you rooted or unlocked?

I used to have the same issues as you, but like jmar, I rooted and am currently running AOKP B28, LeanKernel 2.7.2 with the 4.0.4 radios, and all of those issues have been resolved. Like jmar said, you can always unroot and relock if you don't find it satisfactory, but take it from me, everyone on this board is nothing but helpful and would be willing to answer any questions you have.

Just wait for the update or do it yourself by unlocking and Rooting. if you are having those issues now, you will have them with a new phone as well most likely.
most, if not ALL your problems are going to be solved by the 4.0.4 or 4.0.5 update which should be hitting fairly soon.

i ran stock for maybe 2 days....maybe. my only issue was the data dropping.
but ever since i flashed the 4.0.4 radios and started running 4.0.3 or newer, i have not had a single issue. signal is still lower than other phones i have had, but i still can always make calls/texts, usually i am on 4g when my other phones were on 4g and the data switches are almost instant and rarely do i get the "check your network connection" message.

I've had the issue where others can't hear me since day one. I am hopeful that upcoming update will fix the issue. So 3-4 weeks ago I called Verizon support and asked to be escalated to Tier 2 support. I explained to them my issue and told them I wanted my account noted that i was having this issue and if the next patch didn't fix it I wanted a new phone. The support person was very helpful, even Googling the issue since it was the first time they had heard about it.

A few days ago we had to call billing regarding my wife's phone and they asked how everything was going. I mentioned the issue and they saw the notes on my account.

So I would at least let Verizon know you are having issues ahead of time because if this new ICS update doesn't fix it I think they will have a lot of people wanting to return the phone.

I actually started looking at the instructions to do this (even though I can't stand the idea of voiding my warranty) and there is no way I can do it. Those instructions, while well done, are like reading an alien language to me. I've assembled PC's, formatted HDD's and loaded operating systems and I can't begin to comprehend this process. I think it's more complicated to the average Joe than you skilled rooters realize.

For what it's worth, I had never rooted a phone before either, but there's a lot of toolkits that make it easy for you. Also, everyone here is very helpful. I'd say a good 60-70% of my posts are questions lol

it can definitely take time, patience, and some trial and error...but well worth it IMO

also, if you can get the phone back to stock locked there should be no problem with having a warranty honored

I don't think the process is likely that difficult; but I think where a lot of people come from is not wanting to take the time, read the instructions as well as some trepidation that they are doing this to THEIR phone and if it goes down, they have no phone. Even if you have a backup phone - it was replaced for a reason, who wants to go back to that godawful monstrosity (that was so great when you first bought it, right!) I think for most people, if you could download a program, connect your phone click a few buttons, maybe enter some information it would be on like donkey kong; but most people between being scared of not having a phone and really lacking in desire to do the things they have/need/want to do experimenting with one's connection to the outside world ranks pretty low.

So since some of you DID flash custom roms, which set of instructions did you use that worked for you? Perhaps a thread dedicated to custom rom install reviews with posts such as: "I installed the <name of rom> and used these instructions <link> and I grade the overall process a A/B/C/etc and rate the process as <Technical level say from total noob to IT Pro.>

I checked the Sticky at the top but didn't notice any reference to custom ROMs in it. (Lots of other handy stuff though!)

instructions?
download Wugs root toolkit,
download the drivers through the toolkit
plug in your phone and follow on screen instructions...it is VERY easy...and behind the OG droids superone click app, this was the easiest Root i have ever done. and the toolkit can return you back to stock so the warranty claim is no issue.

When I brought my nexus in February and after the 14 days return policy was over. I started having some issues with my phone, keep in mind I paid full retail for my Gnex. I went to the same vz store that I bought the phone hoping they will replace with a new phone. To make a long story short, I made a big issue that i paid almost $700 for this phone. The best they could do for me was send me a certified refurbished phone because of the 1 year warranty. I was upset but once I received the certified phone I was very happy I did this, it was like night and day. I had no problems with the phone everything was working perfect. What they do is put the phones thru various test before they can call it certified refurbished. I would try this method if you are experience problems with your Gnex. I'm glad I did

How long have you had your refurb? I am familiar with refurb phones, they are basically frankstein phones with different working pieces from multiple phones. Doesn't seem right getting a refurb to replace your brand new phone, but thats just me being picky I guess.

What do they do if the owner has buyer's remorse and returns it for a different phone? (refurb)
What happens if the box gets damaged ? (refurb)

Not all refurbs are phones with issues. :D

Good point I guess I never thought about that. This is especially relevant because my phone is seemingly getting worse, so I cracked and went to Verizon and my refurb was delivered today. I'll get it up and running and see if its any better, all while waiting for that elusive update to fix all my issues.

I've had my GN since late December. From day one I've had the issue with the person I'm calling saying my voice sounds like I'm underwater and the squawking sound coming from the speaker, on my end, after on the phone for about 10 minutes. I could hear the squawk whether on speaker phone or not. I called VRZ yesterday and the tech support guy told me it was a hardware issue and no update would fix it. He told me they would be sending out a "new" phone replacement. Honestly, it wouldn't matter to me if it's new or refurbed as long as it is in excellent condition and it works!

I got my phone in mid December when it came out and occasionally had the people can't hear me issue. It now seems to be getting worse, plus i'm starting to get the voice sounds like I'm underwater and sqauwking sound as well.
Are you getting the replacement through insurance or warranty?

should be through warranty. no need to pay anything unless the phone is 1 year old.

FWIW, the 4.0.4 radios fix that problem. Just sayin'

I got the replacement through warranty. I can say it is definitely better than the previous one, however I have had one occasion of hearing the squawk. I would recommend giving Verizon a call.
NOTE: I also returned my old Nexus with the pre-printed label from Verizon using FedEx Smartpost...there seems to be an issue where no one can find any tracking information on it. Verizon is now stating they are going to charge me >$500 if I don't return the phone. It's ALWAYS something. LOL

I've found that I have a number of aps that synch frequently which causes a constant drain on my phone. I got it, remedied it. However, at work we have a wireless router which is outside our company network. It is there so we can connect to it via wi-fi and stream music or whatever on our cell phones while working in our cubicals. Now my old phone and everyone around me gets 40mbps. I can stream pandora on as low as 28mbps without an issue (on HTC Evo). On the galaxy S2 I only get 11mbps at the same exact spot everyone else gets 40+. I cannot use pandora while at work. This is a deal breaker for me. Constantly hearing unrelated conversations around me makes it very hard to concentrate. Once I removed wifi my battery lasts all day for texting, checking email from time to time etc. Phone reception in a titanium glass building bites or I'd stream on the phones data plan which is unlimited with sprint. Unless I can find how to resolve this problem, I'll be turning the phone in for something else. Any recommendations on fix?

I'm pretty sure you got the wrong forum. This is for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. The forum for the Sprint Galaxy SII is here.
