What's the "nearby" box for? I see you can select them?

When I click the nearby box, I can select individual ones to then be the main focus. Then when back on the map screen it shows just that one. What does this do?

Also what's with the 1, 2, or 3 footprints? Is that distance?

I think 100 m was an estimate I heard for each print. The box is like a radar. if you walk towards rustling leaves and the prints go down you are headed in the correct direction for that pokemon. no prints mean they are in your sphere of influence and should eventually pop out.

Yea, it's exactly what legalkill said. Selecting a Pokemon will bring it up as the primary pokemon that shows in the nearby box. You can do this to track a specific Pokemon down. The closer you get, the less footsteps you'll see.

Also note there is also a very fain green indicator that shows up on the tracker box whenever you are facing the correct direction for that pokemon!

I havent had a chance to test that thoroughly yet, but its definitely there.
