Root What's the risk?

If I root my phone, will there be any problems regarding phone insurance either from VM, or a third-party?

I desperately want to root my phone to increase its capabilities, but its a deal breaker if I can't replace my phone.

i'm with the OP here. i'm interested in rooting, but when i read the directions on how to do it, it just seems like a risk. i'd say my technical skills are average. i just don't want to completely screw my phone up.

Actually rooting the phone does not harm the phone,it just gives you SU # if you ever worked with Linux you would understand better,where you would run a risk of screwing the phone up would be installing one of these custom Roms,where you are flashing into the firmware and or boot-loader,and basically becoming a beta tester,but you can be assured that plenty of no it alls have bricked android phones and got an exchange for them even though they voided the warranty.

thanks. i think your last sentence has actually convinced me NOT to root my phone. if no it alls are breaking their phones, then surely there's too much of a risk....more than i want to deal with at least.

I should clarify not everybody bricks their phones,i have done this and not had any problems,but you should be warned before doing this,i really do not think i's possible to brick by just rooting it,it's when you do not read into these custom flashes that the risk is certainly their.

ah. ok. i may still look into the root then. i think i'll stay away from the custom ROMS though. maybe a dumb question, but when the 2.3 upgrade becomes available from VM, will i have to manually install it?

i almost feel like we should have a "rooting for dummies" thread, lol!

I do not see an issue with getting the update if the phone is only rooted but if their is a Custom Rom,you would have to flash back to the stock Rom.
