What's the touchpad/trackpad like?

LOL that was good, sir! I can't stand all this fanboi hate that I am hearing/reading these last few days from people that have or are getting the Incredible. The N1 is not that inferior to the incredible. They are basically the same phone. I do wish the N1 had the better touch screen sensor in it though.

To the guy that posted all that nonsense. I cannot believe that you would tell someone to not say anything if they haven't used the Incredible. The author of the post just wanted to find out how the optical trackpad worked. I was also really interested in this because I really like the trackball on my N1. Especially since I now have CM and trackball notifications.

Overall, the Incredible is a great phone but it just like the N1 has it's downsides. It's all what the user wants. They have the same specs where it counts except that Incredible has 8 mega pixel camera and 8gb internal memory. The touch screen sensor is a huge upgrade tho. It just matters what the person likes more. If you like sense UI then the Incredible is good, but if you just want Vanilla Android with faster updates then the N1 has it's benefits. We are all on the same android team and shouldn't even have this stupid debate. I for one would love the Incredible to succeed even more than the Droid did so we can continue to see great Devs jump on board the Android train. Stupid fanboi responses like you said is ignorant and makes you look like a little kid.

yep. still using my omnia winmo (cooked 6.5). its optical mouse is worthless (then again, so it the phone with its 3 reboots a day with moderate use). it has 2 modes: CURSOR MODE--you must lift finger and re-drag for each letter (i.e. cursor movement) or selection (i.e. webpage browsing)--think of it as using arrows on your keyboard; OR MOUSE MODE--ugh. horrid due to its poor sensitivity and constant lag--you either undershoot or overshoot your target, minor adjustments NEVER work, must drag the mouse away from your target, then try again. and bc of the 97mb ram and poor winmo implementation, the lag is devestating. trust me, it gets frustrating. the mouse mode, if htc has implemented it correctly, will act very similar to the trackball on N1. at least i hope it does. i pray it does.

YES! That's exactly why I made this thread. I had an Omnia too (using droid now) and it's optical mouse was absolutely terrible. Needing to lift your finger and re-drag once for each character you want to move makes the thing useless. I was kind of turned off when I heard the Incredible will have an optical mouse, using the trackball on my friend's N1 was great for correcting test or zooming through a long list of links that are close together and hard to hit accurately with your finger. I hope the Incredible's optical mouse will be just as convenient. There's no reason why it couldn't be.

I think my best option will be to pre-order the Incredible and see what it's like on launch day. If I'm not happy with it I'll have to return it and keep waiting for the Verizon N1.

Yep, the blind fanboy views go both ways though ;) People that defend or attack a device not out yet are funny :) Except the iPad of course (before release), since it sux :) ;)

This weekend, I will post a review and use the Droid as comparison:

1. Signal reception (Droid rocks)
2. Call quality (Droid rocks)
3. 3.5mm output quality (Droid is kind of weak)
4. Touch pad use with games (Droid has KB) This is a biggy for me.

Not bothering with battery life, since too subjective. I do know that Sense, social apps, widgets and 3G are battery hogs, so people should not be surprised a smallish battery results in short battery life.
 
I'd give it a try before deciding that the joystick is not for you. I'm sure htc did some testing and found it to be superior to the trackball or is tired of replacing trackballs that get dirt and lint under the roller and thus causing unexpected errors. I know with my eris the trackball was finnicky at best. Sometimes it worked well other times it would scroll all the way to one side and require me to get it unstuck before i could continue doing what it was i was doing. If the trackpad/joystick works as good or better i will be more than happy. Sure a trackball sounds like a good idea, but i think the execution of it is flawed.
 
I use to have an omnia...winmo 6.5 rom...LOVED that the trackpad could be made a mouse!!
praying its a hack or something similar for the incredible.
 
i had an omnia that had a optical pad so im sure ill like the optical more and my balls wont be falling out :)

Directed at me? I've used the phone -- I don't like the pad.
 
Well it looks like the N1 may not make it to Verizon after all.

In a way this makes me happy since I can now preorder the Incredible without worrying that something I'd prefer is right around the corner. Heading to the VZ store soon!
 
A trackpad or optical sensor is the least precise cursor movement method.

Trackballs are better, but like old mice that used balls, there was maintenance issues, that's how it goes with all moving parts.

Between those two is the d-pad. If the d-pad has a pressure sensor, and 360 degree movement (think a single circle where you press the direction you want to move), it would far outstrip any other method.

The latter idea is similar to using a ps3 joystick to move the cursor in it's web browser. It actually works quite well, despite it's movement speed limitations.
 
The only bright side is how little the trackpad will be needed. If it weren't such a small part of the phones operation it would likely be a deal breaker for me.
 
Never used a trackpad, trackball, optical sensor, nada.... so it will be all new to me. Using my old pos iphone if i wanted to edit a text or a web address I would simply press and hold in the area I wanted to edit and it would give me a little magnifying glass so i could put the curser exactly where it needed to be. Also, clicking on hyperlinks wasnt that hard to get perfect. I rarely ever made misclicks ever. Is the touch screen less/more sensitive than the iphone's?
