Help What's up with the gps?

My GPS was definitely worse testing with google maps than it had been. Couldn't get a lock at all. Then read somewhere that the google maps update was causing this problem on non-epic phones.

I let the GPS run for 30 seconds, then loaded the sprint telenav software. It locked on me instantly. I then re-opened google maps, and after a couple of seconds, I finally got a lock. From what I have read, there is definitely something wrong with the maps update. But with 2.2 i locked in sprint nav faster than I ever had in the past.

I'm starting to wonder if it's not just the GPS of the phone, but possibly certain applications inability to work with the Epic's GPS that is causing the problem.

Seems like froyo has messed it up.anyone else with this problem?

On the contrary, my gps seems to work much much better after the Froyo update. Before the update, my gps used to take 30 seconds + to lock onto sats, now it only takes 5 seconds. Also, GPS Test reports accuracy down to 3.3 feet with 8 sats in use, much better than before. I can even lock onto sats while inside my office bldg, something I could never do before.

Having said that, the compass no longer fuctions properly after the update.

I have the gps status app and I couldnt lock on to any satalites after the ota update. I did what droid newb did and pulled the battery and everything works perfectly

Did you guys get a lock before updating? Did you modify the GPS settings using the dialer code? If so, did you set it back before updating?

I know I didn't change the "cold start" to warm start before updating, but I did make sure I had a lock before going to update.zip. I'm not saying one way is right or wrong, but it's good to know what may be a common cause to those having problems vs. those not having any.

As soon as I updated via update.zip, I went to the window, and got a lock within 5 seconds and it got as low as 24.x feet, while I was in my basement.

I'm just wondering what steps everyone took and why some are having problems with GPS while others aren't having any...

I did a manual install and the phone got laggy, battery life sucked and gps wouldn't work. Did a factory reset and everything is gravy now.

GPS is actually leagues better for me on Froyo. Just checked Nav, Places and Maps and all locked faster and better than they ever have. GPS was useless while driving before. Now it actually works.

After a clean wipe on 2.1, Wireless Networks, and GPS activated, the best lock I could get was within 1500 meters. If I had Wifi on, it narrowed to 80 meters. This is all using just the Google Maps app.

After installing 2.2 manually with only Wireless Networks and GPS activated, I still only got 1500 meters. Turn on Wifi, it narrows down to only 80 meters again. If I exit it and run Sprint Navigation, it locks on within 10 meters of my location. I stay within 10 even if I turn off Wifi.

Locking within 10 meters should suffice, but it's kinda ridiculous that I have to turn on everything to get a good lock. If it wasn't safe to tinker with the GPS while driving, it definitely is not safe with this one! Maybe I should just forget about Google Maps and just use the Sprint Navigation app.

I am getting 10-12 satellite locks withing seconds after going to EB13 with accuracy as good as 3 feet. I used to never lock indoors and now I can get at least 5 or 6 satellites inside.

I also could not get a gps lock using goggle maps, after updating to 2.2.1.
But Sprint Navigator worked fine. The funny thing is, after using Sprint Navigator, and going back to goggle maps, I was able to get a very fast gps lock, and accurate within 1 meter, which is a first! Now the gps locks super fast, every time I try it, even indoors.

3 feet? Don't you mean 3 meters? I don't think a 3 feet lock is possible with any GPS device, not even my Garmin in my vehicle locks to within 3 feet.

I'm getting a accuracy within 1 to 2 meters now, indoors.

That reminds me, I should probably test mine outdoors. My house is a complete deadzone when it comes to phone reception or for when I use my Garmin, and I'm always testing my Epic's GPS when I'm sitting at my desk, haha.

Edit: I just tested it outdoors (OK, inside a coffee shop, but this place is made of nothing but glass windows), and I got a lock within 3 meters with only Wireless Networks/GPS switched on. Previously, I was getting within 10 meters at best. Again, I ran Spring Nav before Google Maps.

No, 3 FEET. I use the app GPS Test, for my accuracy figures. Since the update to 2.2, GPS Test routinely reports accuracy of 3-4 feet. The best I have seen is 3.3 feet, or 1 meter. That was with 8+ sats locked.

My gps works great now, but when I use the network to locate me on maps I am constantly locked to wherever I turned my phone on. When I enable gps I get my exact location. When I turn it off it shows me back to where I was when I turned my phone on at.
