What's your free RAM amount running AOSP 2.3.3?

I average about 47 mb free, unless I've just used the browser, then it drops down into the 30's. If I use ATK to kill everything except Fancy Widget, Messaging, SMS popup, and Where's my Droid, my free RAM jumps back up to about 77M. I don't have any widgets running other than the FW Clock. I have background sync enabled, i can toggle it off/on whatever, would rather just leave it on. I have the Facebook app installed, but don't use a widget and told it to never update automatically. Just wondering what you guys performance is like, have been skimming the forums for stuff I might be missing, feel free to discuss with me or point me to existing forums.

GB is pretty sweet! I like all the additional options/etc, built-in governor, etc. Just loaded it last night after going from 2.2.1 to LiquidSense to now this. I don't think I'll ever go back, this feels right for the phone, just want to optimize performance. Doing the battery cal. right now.
 
+1 for sobe #5 kernal. Also, I use autokiller which is different from a task killer. You set up a profile, I use strict, and it manages the tasks to optimize the memory automatically. I average around 75mb to 85mb free and even see it tick over 100 every once in awhile. Also, in the advanced settings there are more tweaks. One is the sd card tweak that allows faster reading from sd. And some are just redundant that are already built into asop's rom. But all in all I feel like it helps keep my phone snappier, if that's even a word:rolleyes:
 
I am playing with autokiller now to get it where I like it. Might fore-go ATK once I get it where I like it.
Have been reading about s0be #5 on XDE, looks like all the bugs have been worked out. One concern I have is that if you flash other ROMs, will you then also have to change the kernel to be one that will be compatible with those ROMs? I dunno, have only flashed ROMs at this point, never a kernel. How would I go about flashing s0be's kernel? Have downloaded the 110 mb zip, would I just reboot with ClockworkMod and unzip and run it? No need to re-flash my ROM?

To flash a kernal you boot to recovery wipe cache and davlik cache. Then flash the zip. I'm worried about what zip you downloaded though my kernal file is only 2.47mb. And no you will not have to reflash your rom everything will be as you left it.

And it won't effect future rom flashes because when you flash a new rom the kernal is removed for whatever kernal comes with that rom. And then you would need to manually reinstall the kernal again.

s0be-cm-kernel-236215f.zip - This is the 110 mb file, i dunno what it could be, found it on XDE.

update-35_sobe.zip - Also have this one downloaded. Can I just run this update even though I currently have 2.6.29.6-aospCMod kernel installed?

Both were downloaded from XDE from posts by s0be, both in regards to HTC Hero CDMA and aosp 2.3.3
 
Sweet. Thanks, guys. It's nice to have GB on this older (1yr!) phone, and it's enough that it runs pretty fast without major tweaks, but every little bit will help. I just finished a discharge and wiped battery stats again, am recharging with the phone off, when it gets done I'll flash this and then tweak it out a little more. I definitely LOVE this rom the more I use it, it's just got so many more options for customizing and fine-tuning, Android has definitely come a long way and is on a good path.
 
I had like 19MB free on froyo. with the ability to move all non-ROM apps to the sd, im sitting at 85+MB free on 2.3.3

I think he meant the RAM and not the internal memory. I personally just let Android do its thing with allocating and deallocating my handset's RAM.

I have never had an issue with that. RAM is not treated like it is on say an older Windows computer in that if you have low RAM, that really does not matter because Android always automatically kills unnecessary apps that are sleeping in RAM to free up the necessary amount for whatever is in the foreground.
 
After reading on another forum about camera issues, I am holding off on flashing this kernel until it seems to be resolved. It seems fairly common for other folks to have camera issues, and I definitely use my phone more for pics and messaging than just about anything else.

I am on this ROM right now and have not experienced any camera issues at all. I have been on this ROM since CyanogenMod 7 Final was released.

What type of camera issues are people experiencing, so that I can be on the look out for them? For what it is worth, my friend is rocking this ROM as well and has not reported any camera issues either.

Yeah, what the dude above me said. I'm on the ROM, i just haven't flashed the s0be kernel yet, check out the 2.3.3 thread on this site and on the XDE site, all kinds of folks having issues with camera malfunctioning or not working. I guess a few are downloading a different camera app to work around the issue.

BTW: How are you liking that NookColor you mention in your signature?

I love my B&N Nook Color. It is easily the cheapest way to gain access to the entry level Android tablet world. The build quality has been great with mine. I also like using the built-in book reading features when the mood strikes me.

Right now I am running CyanogenMod 7 for my B&N Nook Color, but I have also run Android 3.0 Honeycomb. There is supposed to be an official Android 2.2 update coming this month that brings full Flash 10.2 among other enhancements.
 
Flashed the s0be kernel update today. Phone seems to run fine, no camera issues that I can tell so far. I actually had to stop using auto-killer, though, it definitely made the phone more laggy in general use, switching between home screens and what not. I'll just let the OS manage it's own memory. Might run ATK after using browser, though.
 
GB was cool and all, but after multiple issues I had to quit using it. Camera was freezing up constantly, and that's not cool because I have 2 kids and use my camera alot. Incoming calls would often freeze up, also not cool. This past weekend I flashed the latest stock, applied every possible update, re-rooted, uninstalled bloatware, and use Advanced Task killer after using browser, facebook, whatever. Phone works pretty good, not using any widgets other than clock. Might go back to a Froyo rom, anyone know if ALL the bugs ever got worked out of AOSP's Froyo? The only real issue I had with the Dec. build of Froyo is that if my phone went to sleep while in camera mode, I would have to force close and reboot the phone.
 
Before I switched to GB, I had no issues with the last release of AOSP 9.9.2 release, as for GB I have no issues with that either, since you RUU back and rooted again, I would give it a shot again and make sure you do a full wipe before installing, also for camera you can use others apps that work much better, such as sleek camera, or FX Camera, they work just fine

I have always wiped the recommended before rooting anything, not sure what went wrong in GB, I suspect s0be because all the issues started after loading that kernel. After I get this stock image customized and backed up I will try Froyo (12/10/10 is the latest i believe?) and GB 4/29/11 again.

Yep, the problems seemed to start for me after loading that kernel, unfortunately. Next time I try GB I probably won't mess with the s0be and see if the problems pop up again or not.
