what's your opinion on the rear camera?

I'm not very impressed, to say the least. My previous phone was a samsung charge and the picture quality was amazing. I do like my d3 I just wish my pics didn't look grainy. Anyone else feel this way?

Mine aren't grainy at all! The only complaint I have is the blue-ish tint. But that's easily avoidable with 3rd party apps.

Strange. The pictures come out almost like there is a film of some sort over the lens distorting the photo. Maybe I'm just used to the amazing shots my charge took =/

Just curious, have you checked the lens? If you have fingerprints or dust on your camera, it could cause that.

+1

hopefully that will get fixed

Compared to the Thunderbolt I think they're pretty close, better than my X still

Yeah, I've wipes the little smudges from the lens before snapping shots. Doesn't fix the issue. It's not a huge issue, I suppose. Although my cell phone is always nearby when I'm wanting to take pics so that's usually the camera I reach for.

I give the camera a 3.5 out of 5. It's a little bit above average. My pics don't look grainy at all unless it's low light Moderate to High levels of light, the pics look great. I also really like the video it takes.

for a Phone Camera it works well, if you want great pix, get a Nikon D80. Mine works well. Remember that a digital camera needs lots of light for a good pix especially if it has a small lens. The flashes on phones are too small and led flashes causes strange colors as it is...

I'm not looking to take professional photos with it. I'm simply comparing the quality of the pics to my charge and their is no comparison imo

I am sorry, but this is not true at all.

The 3rd party app does a good job to fix the color for outdoor shots but not for indoor shots.

Please check out this thread:

is the camera fixed by using a different camera app? - Page 5 - Droid Forum - Verizon Droid & the Motorola Droid Forum

And then check out the posts and this post specifically:

"Colors are still going to be off post processing because of the nature of JPG files. The only way to fix it is with an update that correctly samples the right white balance settings before the sensor writes the image to disk."

Everyone needs to call Motorola to make them completely aware of the problem or else they will not fix it. Seriously. Call Motorola tomorrow and complain.

I hate the stock camera. My Incredible took much better pictures. I hate the bluish tint and I find taking a sharp picture is a challenge.

I use Vignette over the stock camera app. Much better settings and more White Balance settings to remove the blue tint. A little easier to take sharper pictures too.

Now if only someone can add Custom White Balance to the camera apps and it would solve all this!

What setting do you use in the Vignette app?

White Balance. Depending on the situation it has a bunch. For instance, I was taking a pic of my cars engine last night around dusk. Stock camera had bluish tint. WB did not fix anything. Opened up Vignette and set the WB to Sunset. No more blue tint.

LaCes OuT, you talk about sharpness. Do you see sharpness as a separate issue, or a lack of sharpness due to the blue tint?

A combo of both. The blue tint definitely blurs the photo some but I think the camera itself has a sharpness issue even in good lighting.

Don't get me wrong, it still takes acceptable photos but definitely room for improvement.

absolutely disappointed with the r-camera on the D3. Everything is blue and washed out with stock camera app. I miss my DX's camera so much. I used to take pictures all the time. None with this. I know it's software and I hope motorola/vz pushes an update to fix it.

are we SURE its software related?

Here are 2 examples. The first is the stock app, second is Vignette. I tried Sunset WB on both. The stock one below is on Auto WB but the Sunset had a similar look. Photos were taken around dusk with no flash.

I too have the blue-tint issue and have been playing a lot with settings. I think it would be helpful if more people discussed specific settings.

First, I only get significant blue tint with the flash on. Otherwise pics are very nice...especially close ups.

Second, I have tried zoom fx and 360 with the recommended fluorescent setting, but all my pictures are then too green.

The best settings for me when I need to use the flash are stock cam, steady photo, and it is critical that I do not have the 6mp widescreen photo option checked. With those settings, no more blue for me.

I think you're right now. I wasn't considering the settings. I called Verizon and they walked through some very basic troubleshooting steps but were not able to resolve the issue. They sent me a new phone which I received yesterday and the pictures no long have a blue tint to them. The video looks great now too. I think it was a defective sensor on the last phone. I was actually surprised they were going to play ball and send me a new phone even though I was well outside the 14 day return policy.

The technicians said they were unaware of this camera issue. I told them to check this forum and Motorola's to see there were others experiencing this. Who knows... I refuse to believe I'm the first call they've received regarding this. :)

Aside from the bluish tint sometimes it just refuses to focus, but I'm not a huge picture man so it isn't a killer.

No there *is* an issue with the blue tint and if memory serves correctly I saw a Moto forum moderator say that Moto is working quickly to get a fix out. Many are saying it is a white balance (?) issue. The camera rocks on this thing (as anyone can see with video) but the software has an issue. I'm looking forward to a fix which will make this a killer camera!
