Hangouts works across all platforms as does Samsung's ChatON. But there are lots of options on the playstore.

I dont know how popular it is but its on every new android phone by default i think so a lot of people probably have it.
Its the best IM app imo. I like the video chat feature

Theres also Kik, BBM, Viber, loads of apps

Apparently FB arent gona change it but i think people are maybe a bit uneasy about a company like that having their number/info

There's BlackBerry Messenger. It is cross platform, so you don't have to get a BlackBerry phone to use it.

For straight up messaging I like Viber, I think its faster than any other app I have used! If you want a cam feature Line is good too. Maybe it's just me, but Hangouts seems slow to me compared to these two!
