When will you upgrade (from Nexus One)?

I think those 1,5Ghz processors ain't going to happen until we get some more powerful batteries and I don't just mean more mAh (li-ion batteries are ancient technology).

I agree with you on that, battery technologies are still years behind compare to the smart phone's technologies and advancement. I wonder how many hours you can get on a 1.5ghz with our current battery tech XD very little I'd think...I mean we're flirting with just over 1 day of moderate use with a 1Ghz.

I'll probably upgrade when the next iPhone comes out. I really like the Android OS but I think the iPhone is just so much smoother, the apps (even the ones that have Android versions as well) are much nicer and the UI is 100x better. I'm sure I'll be back to Android one day but we'll see.

Okay, how is a shittastic notification system (not much of a system at all, even) combined with blocky icons on a black background a "100x better" UI than a completely customizable one with a real notification tray? No really, explain that one to me.

I was thinking about this yesterday....I keep phones for about 1.5-2 years on average. Probably be less with this one, especially now that phones are actually advancing rapidly. I will likely wait until Nexus 2 or 3.

I have to admit that when I thought my Nexus was bricked due to an encounter with water (rice saves the day!), I was considering getting the Incredible.

In order for me to jump off the N1 bandwagon.... a phone needs to have these following specs:

-largers screen (similar to the HD2)
- higher resolution, HD capatible
-runs Android
- 10 MP camera with HD recording
-Dual high def speakers.
- 4G
-live HD TV
- super battery... 4 months standby time
-solar powered

Can't a guy dream? :)

GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!!:eek::eek:

But I agree... Although, I have had a Leo for a while to play with and the larger screens may be nice to have so you can see more, however, too bulky.

Otherwise, yeah, this is spot on. :D

If this super phone was to ever be created.. what would the appropriate name be? How much for unlocked version?

-Google Nexus Infinity

I was talking about this to some co-workers. There are 4 of us with Nexus Ones and we all love them.

All this talk of phones coming out with 1.5ghz processors, I realize it won't be long before >2ghz phones come out.

I figured I would need two things to happen before ditching my N1.

1. 2.0ghz or higher.
2. Android 3.0

What about you all?

I'm such a phone nut, probably when something I can't not buy comes out. I've already had the DROID, T-Mobile N1 and AT&T N1 in the last 7 months. I am already contemplating importing the Desire from Canada when it drops.

If was was being a bit more reasonable I would wait until a 4G phone hit on AT&T or Verizon.

I will keep my N1 as long as possible. This is the second Android phone that I have owned. The first was the G1. Along the way I considered upgrading but when I really thought about it I found no compelling reason to do so. That was until the Nexus One came along. There were too many reasons to not want to upgrade. The 1ghz Snapdragon processor, gorgeous display, improved camera and Android 2.1 (and now 2.2). Another benefit is that the phone is a Google phone and not controlled by my carrier. Why is that important? Look at 2.2. The new tethering and hot spot features are a big deal for me, as well as people wanting to use the tethering option to be able to use their laptop on the go. I would think that the carriers will want to disable this feature on their phones. But for those who bought their phone directly from Google, we will be able to use these features without any fear of having them disabled by our carrier.

When a phone comes along that has too many new features that are not available on my N1, I will upgrade. Until then, I am happy with my N1.

I plan on keeping a phone for around 1 year normally. It usually works out less than this.

However with the N1 I have learned that I like to stay with stock Android so next time it depends on which phone comes out with this and is not a Sense type experience. It also depends on the specs of the replacement phone and the level of support the N1 continues to receive.

So to the OP, an impossible question really.

You've clearly never used an iPhone. I agree that Android has more features and a better notification system. But using an iPhone is MUUUUUUUUUUCH smoother, there are no jitters and there is less lag (and that's on a 3GS which has a slower processor speed than the N1!)! I fully expect the next iPhone to blow away my N1 in terms speed. When I scroll through my apps, email or even the different screens there is always a bit of lag. There is none of that on the iPhone and the rubberbanding effect makes it that much smoother.

Also, the apps on the iPhone are simply much nicer than their Android counterparts. Not to mention there are a LOT more apps in their app store and much less junk (although there is still plenty of junk). iPhone OS 4 is also allows you to customize the background (just like Android) and the folder function is much better than Androids. If the next iPhone has video calling (as expected) it's case closed. The one item holding me back is that I love Google Voice and Apple rejected the app in their app store (stupid!).

I still don't see why people use video calling as an argument? I literally have never seen ANYONE make a video call except for when it first came out to show off/have a look at it.

And as for including wallpapers to state iPhone 4 will be better that Android - come on...

Why is the folder function better in your opinion? I don't use it in Android...

Video calling has never been used b/c it has never been released to the masses in a device that millions of people have. It's pretty tough to video call when only one person has a camera.

As for the wallpaper comment, I never made the argument that that was the reason iPhone 4 was better than Android. I was responding to a post that said
"Okay, how is a shittastic notification system (not much of a system at all, even) combined with blocky icons on a black background a "100x better" UI than a completely customizable one with a real notification tray?"
I was simply stating that the new OS WON'T have a black background as it's fully customizable just like Android.

The folder function is better b/c of the UI. The icon shows up to 9 apps on the folder icon and when you open it, it doesnt cover the whole screen until you close it. It simply shows the apps in the folder above the icon.

Now...will the iPhone 4G have widgets, if not...Android > iPhone, lol. :p

I agree that it's totally a personal thing and to each, his own. For example, I barely use widgets so I don't find them a compelling reason to use one OS over another. There are certain things I LOVE about Android and certain things that annoy the h*ll out of me. I simply the find the iPhone OS to be a much more fluid and enjoyable experience.

You're one of THOSE people that don't use widgets! :P lol Yes it's all about personal preferences. Like for me...widgets just make my life more easy and the phone efficient to use...so don't really understand why people don't use it XD

What do you use them for? I mean, I have the beautiful weather, stocks and news but I don't find that so amazing. I check the weather once in the morning before I leave my home and I know what it will be for the day. Going into an app isn't that big of a deal to me. News I read on the train and stock I look at a few times a day. Widgets don't save me much time and I prefer going into the app anyway.

Maybe I'm just lazy...and I like to have the least possible steps (clicks) to see what or go where I want. I have all widgets on my home page, lol, since I find them useful. Power Control to have quick access to changing volum, brightness, enabling wifi or bluetooth instead of going into setting. Pure Calender widget to have a quick view of what appointments/dates I have in my Calender. Music widget to change songs/pause/stop without launching the player. Mini info widget that gives me data on my battery%, internal memory and SD memory that are free. And 2 contacts widgets to get access to the 2 people I call/text/email the most.

Yea I don't see any of those as even close to deal breakers. Volume buttons on the left work fine. Auto brightness on the iPhone actually works. Wifi/Bluetooth toggles are convenient (and I have them on my screen) but rarely used. I prefer going into the calendar when I need to see and add appts (and the calendar app on the N1 sucks compared to the one on the iPhone). iPhone allows for music control with a double tap of the home button (don't even have to wake the phone first). Again, more of a convenience than a necessity. I think widgets cause more problems (freezing, slow down OS etc.) than they're worth.

Im a widget whore. I couldnt survive without them now.

I have a widget for detailed battery info/storage info. A bbc news one. the newsrob one for google reader. my sms and gmail one to show me unread messages. Facebook. twitter. Pure calendar. Beautiful widgets small for time date and weather. Sometimes the weather channel one if I want more detailed info. then theres the beautiful widget ones for things like wifi vibrate etc.

having the ability to change it all from the home screens or access info from those screens without even touching a menu is pure brilliance for me. Saves clicking through stuff.

Also I dont know what you do to your nexus one but I dont get any of this juddering you mention. Sometimes it'd be a little slower with the live wallpaper on but not significantly. And my widgets dont even make my phone break stride.

I was a big Iphone fan and I switched to android with the nexus one. A friend of mine asked me why the other day. I said apart from the fact I already have widgets, folders, multitasking, and a faster development cycle, the main reason why is its MY android. By that I mean I dont have to have it looking the way someone else wants. Theres thousands of themes, icon packages, widgets etc not to mention the launchers available to add other functions.

And thats the beauty of android. it can be what ever it wants. you have people selling a fully skinned package like sense ui or motoblur and you have the nexus one/droid offering one to build yourself. Where as apple and palm just offered the one shot deal. At first people liked that but now they are asking.... well what if I want this as well?

bottom line I doubt we'll change you mind as you seem a devout apple fan and seem to have already made up your mind. Also Im half wondering if your just trolling the thread. But incase your not I suggest you have a proper play with your phone because it doesnt sound like you're using half the features it has. That and I think you'll be surprised when the next iphone does come out because the recent models that were "acquired" and then stripped down showed the next iphone has the same processor as the ipad. Which is only 1ghz. So unless theres some magical sorcery going on under the bonnet or some radical software re-write I doubt it'll be much faster if faster at all. And as before unless they've re-written the power management side of things I suspect it'll suffer from the same issue as all the previous models, very poor battery life.

Not trolling at all just having a normal conversation about when I'm leaving my N1 and why (that was the thread topic after all). Oh and I'm DEFINITELY not an Apple fan (hate Mac computers compared to PC and always am willing to try the newest and best technology no matter what company produces it). That being said, my experience with the iPhone 3GS was much more pleasant than my experience with the N1. I definitely LIKE Android but it just doesn't seem like a polished product.

To say that you don't notice any jitteriness is simply a lie (especially if you're coming from an iPhone and would actually notice it). I've gone through 2 N1's and a number of my friends have the device as well. They're all the same. As I said earlier, if you're a big widget user (and you seem to be) obviously Android is the better fit for you. But in terms of quality of apps and smoothness of the OS there is really no comparison to the iPhone.

My phone will be mine based on the apps I put on it and the things I do with it. It's not "my" phone b/c it has some different icons that go to the same application or b/c it has a different background (which the new iPhone OS will be able to do anyway). I still haven't made the decision to switch back as I need to see what Apple announces next month. But I do know that I miss the stability and polish of the iPhone OS as well as the quality of the apps in the app store.

maybe you ought to try a HTC phone? those UI's are polished and time tested. Im personally not a sense UI fan but I can see why people would be.

And you can call me a liar all you like but when running the stock launcher unless I had a live wallpaper on I saw no jitteryness what so ever. Same goes for the 2 guys here in my office with one. the only time we even get any instability is if a dev releases a bad update for an app and it force closes. And we dont see that often.

With the live wall paper on I noticed the odd jitter but nothing significant. And with a launcher on I'd get the odd slow don on apps. How often depending on the launcher. The extremes being about 7 or 8 times a day with home++ where as with helix launcher I only got about 1 every 5 odd days.

However with froyo I've ditched the launcher as its given me the bits from a launcher I wanted.

Im wondering if perhaps its an app running thats causing your issues.

Yea I'm waiting for Froyo and I'm hoping that the speed improvements will make the device more enjoyable to use. Hopefully it gets pushed out soon as I don't want to root my N1 in case I want to sell it.
