I waited for froyo for a while, and though I've loved checking the forums because i love what you guys say, I fjnaly took the root dive on my birthday :) . I'd have to say im very very impressed.

My call quality with skyraider 2.2 vanilla and the 2.15 radio is absolutley phenomenal. I love how it doesn't constantly search for signal and now when I acually press call, it almost instantly places the call with no lag.

My 3g has also been blazing fast. I have fell in love with the dinc all over again. Personally, I don't believe in quadrant but to rant the score is right under the nexus one.

Ive been getting exceptional battery life, but I also have the tricks set up. It's nothing dramatic, but it does seem to be less stressful. Games run smooth as usual, and the vanilla is awesome with speed and quite snappy. I would assume sense is as well, but thats an assumption so i will not speak on it.

Other than that its pretty much what you've asked for. Everything works, all of my apps are fine, and the rooted life is great for software devs like myself. rooting is painlessly easy as well! just make sure you format that card to fat32. Hope I shed some light for a few people, any questions just ask!

I'm using 2.5.2 . Again I apologize for the broken grammar at first! I'm trying to master swype. Also, just to clarify for anyone who might not understand thr difference , vanilla is the default GUI (graphical user interface, what you see and touch) for the Android platform, and sense is HTC's GUI overlay (and blur is MOTO's).

I want this Vanilla he speaks of, how to obtain? Haven't rooted but because of the last week or so I've strongly considered. Can't I get flash 10.1 with root? And can I get OTAs with root? Sorry for my newb-isms:D
 
I wont be rooting since my phone already has a problem. My new phone comes today and if call quality is OK, I wont need to even think about it.

I am a very low risk person when it comes to expensive things. Doesn;t make me smart, just over-cautious.
 
I went with after November 15th. I'm dying for FroYo but trying to be patient. But, patience is a stupid virtue after too long. Figured I'll be on break between school quarters around Thanksgiving so rooting and learning about mods will be a nice winter project.
 
Yup it is a 2.2 rom based off the leak but it has sense stripped from it. Now if you remember that leak had a lot of bugs in it but this developer went through and optimized everything so now there are literally NO BUGS. Its faster, cleaner, easier to use. Its amazing. The whole process took about 20 min plus however long it takes you to set up all your settings and stuff. Heres a quick outline of the process:

1a - Unrevoked3 to gain root
1b - Nandroid backup using ClockworkMod
2 - UnrevokedForever to allow non signed code
3 - Flash 2.15xxx radio (get that here: http://adrynalyne.stfuthxbye.net/rad...28/PB31IMG.zip)
4 - Instal ROM Manager from market
5 - Download SkyRaider 2.5.2 (sense or vanilla, your choice)
6 - chose options to wipe phone then install

Real simple

I have no idea what my phone would be like without Sense. Is there a video i can see?

Also you mentioned he has a sense version as well, im assuming that version is still buggy huh?

Nope, the sense version is just as perfect as the vanilla version. I think he even included all the new widgets and everything. Trust me its worth it. And there really is no need to see a video of what vanilla would look like cuz its literally the plain old vanilla lay out. Whether there actually is a video or not showing, im not sure. And yeah, that root guide in the root section is out of date. Its literally as simple as the steps i described above.
 
Downloading the sdk, installing drivers, installing the leaked ota (no longer necessary), removing bloat (also not necessary as any downloaded rom already has this removed), most importantly it doesnt cover the new radio, it also doesnt cover new versions of wireless tether... Although i must admit, once rooted, using the "installing roms" section is definitely helpful. But Im just saying that if someone wants to root that guide is a bit outdated

What i meant was, i have no idea what vanilla OS is like, i only know sense.

But i guess since that is bug-free also id go with that one anyhow :)

I might just have to do this, you make it seem pretty idiot proof hehe. How much trouble can i possibly get into in a 20min process??? hahaa

BTW, once this is done, i can no longer use VZW to replace my phone if something goes wrong?

No thats not necessarily true. In step 1b or something i said make a nandroid backup. That will return you to the way the phone was after you rooted but before you started modifying things. From there you can unroot the phone by following a guide. I think thats a bit more complicated but it can definitely be done.

Not entirely true. While you can restore to a Nandroid backup, thus removing root and restoring the original radio and OS, there is not, at this time, any way to return your phone to the S-ON state (when you do step 2 above using Unrevoked Forever, you make your phone S-OFF). You cannot, no matter what you do, make it S-ON again.

At least that is my understanding. S-OFF is even below the radio. It is not reversable. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think I am. ;)

Yeah they haven't found a way to to turn back on signature checking but I'm pretty sure nearly no verizon store employee is gonna be able to tell you that ya cant return your phone because its set to S-OFF. Actually im just gonna go out on a limb here and say NO verizon employee could tell the difference

Oh, I agree with you that no VZ employee would bother to check or would notice S-OFF. My point was that there is no way to go completely back to stock once you use Unrevoked Forever because S-OFF will always be there.

Just something people thinking of doing this should know IMO.
 
This thread probably belongs in the root forum. Mostly I don't want to mess with it; do I have to re-enter my email settings and re-download apps etc?
 
I feel about this the same way I feel about "overclocking" PCs; you have three possible outcomes:

1. You root and it's not working right afterwards so 'roll back' and it works.
2. You root and everything works right.
3. You brick your phone

so 66.6% of the possible outcomes result in you being the same or worse off than you are now and 33.3% chance that you will gain functionality you didn't have before but question if every problem you have afterwards is related to rooting it.
 
I want it because it is new. I am a tech junkie. Only money stops me from buying every new thing. The fact it is free makes me want it more, if I dont have by the end of September I will finally upgrade it myself. Maybe ill take an online course and make my own rom. :) (but probably not)

that's a little misguiding. You don't have 33% chance of bricking your phone. I'd say its under 2-5% at the most and thats if you don't follow the directions correctly.
 
Thanks everyone for your thoughts on this. My plan at this point is to wait until the end of the month, get myself a 32 gig card and then root if it is that simple.

I looked through the edit options and I don't see where I can add a option for Never. If anyone has the steps, please message me.

That's faulty math because it assumes each of the options are equally likely. It's like saying "well if I take a shower I'll either get clean or slip and kill myself, that's a 50% chance of death so I'm not going in there."

You have to look at how many people have rooted and take a survey of how many have gotten each of those three situations, THEN look at your odds. If out of 100 people, one has a bricked phone and twenty had problems so they rolled back, then that's 79% odds of everything working.

Is there anyway you could spell it out more clearly then? :D Especially for the people who don't have root and are now highly considering it *cough cough* (me) The newest version of vanilla sounds amazing :D
