Root Where do I start

Hello all! I've been reading through some forums, mainly HTC Desire - All Things Root, and I'm starting to get cold feet! I've never done anything like this before and don't really know where to start, I've kinda overloaded my brain and scared myself. But after talking to quite a few people about the annoyances of my phone, the best solution is to root my phone to be able to customize it. Mainly be able to delete all the preloaded crap so I can run the useful stuff, like Gmail, PayAnywhere, text messaging, calls, contacts... you get the idea.

So what now?

Do I need to back up data on my phone? Should I go ahead and run MyContacts Backup to make sure I don't lose all my numbers? Should I wait until my warranty is up to root? What do I need to have to start? Do I need to get any software upgrades?

Can someone please give me a narrowed down answer on what I should do? I'm not worried about a custom ROM, let's just stick with small victories.

What did you read in all things root? You need to read the rooting faq. This will tell you everything you NEED to know. There is no narrowed answer.
 
Just to add that if you want to delete preloaded apps (and be careful with that, and make sure you have a nand backup before you try!) you need S-Off as well as root. Some techniques give you this automatically, some do not, depending on your phone type (GSM/CDMA) and firmware version. However, deleting pre-installed apps will not in itself give you any more space, as they live in a different storage partition from user apps.

But you are correct, one thing at a time. So as SUroot says, read the rooting FAQ, which is linked in the All Things Root Guide sticky post. If there's anything unclear after that, just ask, but do also tell us some more about your phone when you do (GSM or CDMA, HBOOT information, software version, network branded or not).

So I read through the FAQ Rooting in All Things Desire. Which lead me to read the guides to rooting with Revolutionary and unrEVOked. Which then lead me to confusion.
No one else really has specs similar to mine.

Android Version 2.2
Software Version 2.11.573.5
Baseband 2.15.00.11.16
HBOOT 1.06.0000
CDMA, which I believe also means it's network branded to US Cellular

What I'm confused about is I read to use unrEVOked if you're running 2.2.1 or lower, but only if you have an HBOOT lower than 1.02...

More than anything I just want to have internal memory space to make my phone useful without having to delete apps, texts, phone logs, etc before. Making a nandroid backup would be helpful too, as I have info for work stored in various places in my phone. It would be fun to eventually put a new ROM on it, but not yet.
