Root Where is the pain free method!?

At this point, it would logically follow that the easy root for the Incredible is going to take longer due to the OTA that happened on the Evo. Attention had to be focused on that, as it was more of an issue than this relatively minor inconvenience. Forunately, their Evo patch just went live ~45 minutes ago "...with 99% less brick."
 
Ok, got it to work by using a different computer. Old laptop running XP, installed PdaNet drivers, and used the stuff from the 10 minute video.

yes and there was finally a tweet referencing the incredible... lets hope they can refocus and hook us up!!!!!!
 
I might be able to chime in here....

The guys in unrEVOked working on the incredible are not the same team working on the EVO 4G. A tentative ETA is one week from today, but that is extremely tentative and will likely not be met. Regardless, the root is coming "soon".

Also, this is an entirely new exploit. They have it ready... it is a one-click root that doesn't require a race condition, timing, or anything silly like that. It's literally one-click. They just need to "clean it up" before release. They are not letting any other details about this release out, as they're afraid HTC will patch this exploit.

rpearl in IRC, one of the members of the unrEVOked team working on this root, has recommended against buying SD cards to root the Incredible, as the easy root is on the horizon.

what does this mean for those of us who have already rooted using the current method? will this open up anything new?

edit: reason i ask is because i was going to download busybox yesterday, til i saw all the comments about it not working for the incredible (one of which said something about how we don't have "full root")

I'm pretty sure the "full root" you're referring to is a NAND unlock, which means that apps don't have read/write access to /system, which is what prevents a BusyBox install (although you can install BusyBox while in Clockwork).

This method will not unlock the NAND, and its results will be similar to the one we already rooted folks have used. They've been very clear that they have a working NAND unlock (full root) but will most likely not release it... this is because if something goes wrong with the NAND unlock process, you have a brick. Flashing recovery (Clockwork) is much more versatile in this case, and gives almost the same benefits.

i haven't even installed clockwork yet, been debating whether or not to do it since i'm not interested in flashing roms yet. i guess there's no downside, though?

is there a tutorial on installing busybox thru clockwork?

Not that I know of... busybox will have been installed if you rooted with either the video method or the one here: public:adb_in_recovery [RootWiki]

TitaniumBackup needs a different version of BusyBox... if that's where your issue is, I recommend hitting the "Problems?" button at the bottom, and it will fix it for you. Also, if you have Clockwork you can flash a ROM with BusyBox included (pretty much any custom ROM).

Nothing wrong with attempting it, just don't go out of your way and spend money to make it happen. Of course, if you value your time highly, I recommend waiting for the one-click root.

exactly. I would recommend this (another PC) if troubleshooting and RTFM doesnt work.

Really folks. this is the easiest hack in the world, and ONCE you realize what you were doing wrong you will agree. Its so easy a caveman could do it.

for those waiting for an EASIER way??? good luck. I doubt it gets much easier than this... you could be thanking god you dont have to lift an iron or cut traces.

And for those complaining about nothing available.... its only been 2 months since release. YOU could have been waiting a year.... you should be jumping for joy its been this soon....

enjoy the holidays and think about what YOU want to be doing on your droid... and do it coz the man aint holding anyone back(RIGHT NOW AT LEAST!)

I only installed one that had sense still in it (I like it) only becasue i couldn't get wifi tether to work. Now it does and it's still almost 100% SenseUI with some extra cool root apps preinstalled. Other wise they all seem very similar

You should have Android phone (but it will be in error unless you get root) or android bootloader. Have you downloaded the unrevoked drivers.? They setup that driver correctly. When you are setting at that screen with the X install the unrevoked driver for the device then try again. You will then know for sure you have the right device there. It may help

If you have different computers try all methods on all the computer. I have 3 pc's and it only worked on one of them.
Try it on a friend PC

Oh and don't forget to neat the dog first:D

I got it to work on another computer like I said, but thanks. And if you're referring to the red triangle/exclamation point screen, that was where it wouldn't show up in device manager.

Yes thats the screen and it does go away after the first driver install sound. So you have to install the driver before you select recovery. When I did the 10 minute video the driver disappears and then reappears, about 5 seconds, after the triangle/exclamation screen which is also when I get the message that means you have root.

I think proper drivers for a start is important but it seems the sd card is equally as important if not more so. Once I had all the drivers working it still didn't work but after I got a 8g Sandisk sd card I got in first time 99% of the time and the other 1% just took a single retry. However none of it worked until the sd card so in my case anyways the SD card was more important.

Hope this helps someone.

Hey, I'm happy to be wrong in this case. Though I think I did mention that coming up with an easier method would require a completely different exploit :D

Regardless, this is great news.
