The date the phones were released is meaningless.
Google didn't give the JB code to HTC first just because the HOX was released before the GS3.
Chances are Samsung received the code before HTC because of Nexus line, so they had advantage over HTC in this case.
That is no doubt correct. However, to the uneducated (but still educated enough to distinguish between different versions of android) this won't make a difference, as they will want their update first, given the fact that their phone was released first. When different manufacturers receive the source code (I'm guessing manufacturers get it before it's released to source.Android.com?) won't be a factor to the consumer. Besides, I would think HTC would still be in good with Google, for both the G1 and the nexus 1.
Then there's the people like me that want HTC to succeed (and may or may not have a higher opinion of HTC then Samsung like i do) that are disappointed HTC isn't doing more to try and gain back some mind share with more timely updates.
