Root Which AOSP ROM?

Redux2 doesn't require an ext partition does it? I've had too many sd problems in the past to rely on them.

Thanks Hadron. I couldn't get Mildwild (oxygen) to boot on my phone with a stock hboot when I tried it about 9 months ago. I wasn't sure if that was due to no ext partition.

Presumably then most ROMs that include apps2sd don't need the partition provided they fit the hboot.

Most don't. Some early a2sd scripts caused problems if there was no partition, but I think most are OK now.

If you fancy editing a ROM, remove the script 10apps2sd from /system/etc/init.d before flashing (or use adb to remove it after flashing with the phone in recovery) and then you will certainly be fine without a partition.

My editing skills are limited to Suroot's guide to deleting apps before flashing. Presumably I could insert additional apk files in the same way provided I don't male the system too big for the partition.

Hi Hadron

Thanks again for your advice. I tried Redux2 for a week & liked the multi tasking menu very much. But I found my battery drained much faster than when on Oxygen, which is strange given Redux2 is based on Oxygen. I even flashed the same kernel I'd been using. It made little difference to the dropped signal issue either.

To get around the problem with my screen refusing to come on I thought I would try a different version of Oxygen in case there was a bug. I went for the aptly named Nick's phone! However I didn't want to change hboot again so deleted all the google apps available from the market, deleted email, replaced launcher2 with Holo Launcher and the old market with the latest Play for good measure. I've even swapped the stock dailer for a T9 version from another ROM.

All in all very happy with the result. I have an ICS themed version of my old ROM now with more /system space, more /data space & the battery life I'm used to. So far no problems with the screen. Thanks for the inspiration!

Nick

Hmm, I've had good reasons not to buy a phone so far, so have been playing "wait and see". S3 has dropped more in price than I expected, so it is tempting. Bit of me is still hoping that a decently-specced Nexus will appear after all (i.e. > 16GB storage), though that's not looking too hopeful.

Though if I wait much longer I may as well buy next year's model instead ;)

my buttons started to play up so I installed Button Saviour, gives you soft buttons on screen :)

way ahead of you there ;) its a great app

...ive made quite a few suggestions to the dev for improvements too :D

cheers

After many months on Oxygen I seem to have developed Dan55's flashing addiction! I've gone a little MIUI too!

:-D it's a scary addiction...I've run out of roms to flash :-(
I keep 4 of my faves on sd just in case ;-)

are you on miui xj?

No I'm on the lite version of Miui modded by Moss but I have removed some apps that I don't want, put Pico TTS & the English audio TTS files back in, replaced the launcher with Holo & replaced the Vending app with the latest Play Store. When I first did it I left all the TTS language packs in which left me with just 40kb to spare on my OxygenR2 hboot:o. I now have 4.67mb.

hi,
oh right.wasn't aware of this version.will
have to check out our ;-)
sounds like you have done some good work to
it.is it available to try? ;-)
cheers

Well having tried a number of ROMs (Oxygen, Redux2, Nick's Phone, OxyZM, ReduxZM, Lynx, Miui XJ, Miui modded by Moss20) I'm back with dGB. I spent hours deleting apps, inserting ones I liked from other ROMs & trying to get larger ROMs to fit on the OxygenR2 hboot. It occured to me that it would be far easier to go back to dGB & just use the stuff I like. I'm getting a better phone signal at home too but not sure why.

The only thing I miss is the Oxygen LED notifications. If you get a notification while the phone is charging the LED alternates green & amber. With dGB the charging light over rides all other notifications. I have yet to find an app that will give me LED notifications while charging in a satisfactory way.
