Which email app do you prefer for Gmail? Gmail app, or htc Mail app?

Well, change background to dark or light, able to have notifications suspended during certain hours, also gives you other notification settings, has folder settings, account settings, global settings, you can have it always show images, you have many features for fetching messages, there are many more features to explain, I am simply comparing to the Gmail app as that is what I have always used, not saying any other 3rd party apps don't have those options. ;)

I've not used K9 since last year. I'm asking what the many more features it has over Mail that you mentioned.

I'd like to try the HTC one out. How do I tell the gmail app to stop working so that I'm not doubly killing my battery?

I admit I haven't looked as hard as I might, but the only thing I think you can disable are notifications *in* the gmail app itself. (gmail -> more -> settings, notifications near the bottom).

Since gmail uses push instead of polling, it should already be quite minimal on battery usage.

(Having said that, I'm actually wondering if disabling notifications disables the push traffic as well. It's possible, but I'm not sure how likely that is.)

Yeah I'm not sure. I would think they'd let you disable the push also rather than assuming we'd know they're the same.

Menu --> Settings --> Accounts and Sync --> select Google (with your gmail address below it) --> uncheck Sync Gmail

That's what I would think but it doesn't have a box to uncheck. it has that circle thing for syncing and long pressing doesn't do anything. Menu also doesn't do anything. If I remove that account I lose my contacts etc, so I don't wanna do that.

Ok - you mentioned that in response to Mail, so I was confused when you went to Gmail - Mail's been ahead of Gmail for some time also, and looked for many features like HTC had contracted the K9, especially early on.

When you say K9 folder settings - does it allow you to create folders? Smart folders?

You can uninstall it and always re install if need be

Gmail? No, you can't.

What you can do to put an end to Gmail running in addition to your existing, preferred app is to go to settings, Applications, find Gmail, and Clear data.

Then go into Accounts & sync, Google, and uncheck "Sync Gmail."

No allows you things like folder display class, folder sync class, folder push class or unify class simply allows you prioritize your folders.

One thing I just noticed with the mail app is the folders it has created:

My gmail accout now has three new folders, [Imap]/Sent, [Imap]/Drafts and [Imap]/Deleted.

My hotmail account now has one under the deleted folder called POP.

The Yahoo account doesn't seem to have any new folders created, but I'm not sure it's syncing correctly because it is not showing mail I have saved in there (and I have the settings the same as the other two).

Are the messages, such as in the gmail [Imap] folders actually being deleted? Why did it create new folders in the first place, why doesn't it use the existing ones?

Overall I prefer the gmail app but I can't access it from the lock screen so I am using the mail app just so make it easier and keep it the same at all times

You can easily change any of the shortcuts on the lock screen.
Go to Personalize--> Lock screen--> scroll to the Lock screen you use--> settings--> Tap the Mail icon and then select the Gmail icon from the list

Mine does...once I single tap on Google (where it has the sync picture to the right) it comes to a new screen with all the pieces of the gmail that can be sync'd. Each has a check box next to it (Docs, Music, contacts, Gmail, Picasa web albums, and Calendar). I was able to uncheck 'Gmail' in that list so I don't know where your going wrong. Since you said it has the 'sync symbol' next to it, it makes me thing you are on the previous screen where all of the Managed Accounts are listed but aren't in the specifics for Google.

Problem is there is no box to uncheck. :(

Ok - I was looking at mine when I typed that.

Do you already mail set up on another client?

You are seeing this list after you go to homescreen, Menu, settings, Accounts & sync, google (tap google)?

  • Sync contacts
  • Sync Gmail
  • Sync Picassa Web Albums
  • Sync Calendar

You have a different list?

It's definitely the one that is specific to google. I looked a bunch of times. I just rebooted so I'm checking again.

I haven't set up another client yet and that's the exact list I have, but no box to uncheck.

Exactly my gripe/questions, and one of the main reasons I'm sticking with gmail for now. If the built-in mail app felt like it was doing things the "right way" with gmail, I'd use it. But I do most of my gmail on a desktop system, and I don't want things I do on my phone to behave differently when I go back to my desktop.
