Root which GTab ROM is best for HD playback?

CLTGoBlue

Lurker
greetings,

i have purchased my first android based product, a Viewsonic G Tablet. i have registered w/ xda-developers as well is this board, things seems a bit technical over there and i was hoping this board may be appropriate for some basic questions. i have acquired most of the neccessary info about installing a new ROM and getting flash to work from xda, but their are a few "goals" i have for this unit, and i wanted to determine if they were possible and which ROM would the best. specifically, playing HD movies and tv shows, specifically .mkv files ... is this possible? is either ROM more stable for HD playback? that is going to be this unit's primary use, so if either ROM is the better choice that would be a deciding factor ...

Pretty much all of the Froyo-based ROMS handle HD videos fine. MKV format, not too sure about, as I've never tried, but it handles HD MPEGs.

Just like PS said, I would stay away from the Gingerbread ROMS for now and stick with froyo.

I would also suggest getting Rockplayer or Vital Player to play your MKVs. Also, if they are encoded correctly, they should play fine on the gtablet. I used DVD catalyst to convert my video files some have said that Handbrake works well too.

The have not had success in converting 1080p vids but then again most of my vids are not even 720p. I rather have smaller files that look good than bigger files and look great.

thanks for the replies fellas ... Vital Player, i assume that's an app a la VLC for a laptop?

also, very general question ... is there any point to getting stuff set up app-wise before i'm get a ROM set up?

Not really, because you'll wipe the data during the flash process, which will wipe your settings. UNLESS you buy something like Titanium Backup, which let's you restore app settings.

Since this is your first Android device, here's a couple of useful tips..

I'm sure you read about Clockwork Mod Recovery (CWM)...get to know this tool. Here's a quick post on it's capabilities.

Download Titanium backup from the market- It helps restore your apps if you decide to switch ROMS or plan to wipe your data and start all over again. It makes it easier reloading your apps that you downloaded.

So to answer your question...finally....haha. I wouldn't do too much to the Stock OS if you plan to load a custom rom. After you load up your custom ROM, you can start setting things up but I would suggest to back up your custom ROM before and after you set up your tablet.

Have fun! I think you chose a great device for your first Android tablet device. You'll learn a lot.

hey all.

thanks for this thread, I was wondering the same myself.

I am running CW Mod .08 and Vegan 5.1.

I tried the new vegan 7 rc1, but the video playback was terrible. 5.1 is working ok so far, some short comings, but I hope I can work everything out through some help from the boards.

Thanks

I am also interested in this topic.

I have had my GTab for 2 days. A friend loves his and rooted it and installed Vegan 7.0.0 for me. I've been having fun installing Flash and wallpapers.

I had some HD videos in .MKV format (BlueRay rip of "Torchwood-Children of Earth") that would not play with the built-in player. So I downloaded MoboPlayer.

Then I hit the internet and got some sample files with various extensions and resolutions (some of which are containers for AVI encoded files).

Note: If MoboPlayer cannot play a file - it prompts you to long-press a file and choose "Soft Decoding" which I assume means a software instead of hardware video playback. When I say "SoftDecoding" below - this was the case.

So far:

AVI 560x432 :)
AVI 720x400 :)
FLV (AVI) 1092x1080  - soft-decoding - played at half speed
MKV (AVI) 1028x720  - soft-decoding - played at half speed
MOV 640x360 :)
MP4 1028x720 :) - soft-decoding but played fine
MP4 192x1080  - soft-decoding - half speed
MKV 1028x720  - soft-decoding but played slightly jerky
WMV 640x480 :)
WMV 720x480 :)
WMV 1025x720 :)

* Files were on a USB Flash drive so I wonder if some of the slow or jerky playback problems were I/O?

Is there any way to calibrate the basic Brightness, Colors and Contrast on the G Tab with test patterns?
