Which is better on battery?

I'm running 4.1 on my Galaxy Victory, and I text my girlfriend using kik (so much faster than Sprint's texting). Would it be better to hit the home button and leave kik "running", or back out of it just to open it up a minute later?

SMS will use less battery than Kik though i think(?)

Yeah man. It's so smooth too. They've also added the abilty to make memes, and draw sketches. The developers really put work into it
