Root Which Rom is best for me?

I have been doing a lot of searching around between here and XDA and I would really like to flash the KaosFroyo v39 Rom but I can get over the fact that I will lose HTC Sense.

I personally like my full screen calendar and my clock/weather widget. Can anyone recommend a different rom that may be better suited to my needs. Or does anyone know what apps from Android Market that may work well for replacing what i will lose.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If you like Sense, then really the best ROM that you can run is xtrSENSE. What is it about Kaos Froyo that you think will be better than a Sense-based ROM?

If you want sense like widgets but still want a a froyo-based ROM then I suggest using launcherpro-plus. It's only a few dollars and you get a friend stream, calendar, bookmarks, and people widgets that are similar to the sense ones. Also, beautiful widgets, which is available in the market has the clock you're looking for.

But if you're stuck on sense I'd say go with xtrSense like dooglad said or Tenzo's xtrRCMix. both sense based and as snappy as a froyo ROM

Theres nothing in particual about kaos froyo that is making me choose that. I know a couple of people who have rooted with that rom and they really seem to like it. But for me personally like i said before i really do like the sense UI on my phone.

If i go with xtrSense will it also upgrade me from 2.1 to 2.2? Does anyone have a link on a step by step for flashing with the xtrsense?

xtrSENSE 4.6.5 - All the goodness of Android 2.1 with root access superuser permissions

search for it on XDA forums - Droid Eris

Rooting xtrSense is the same process as rooting the Froyo ROMs

There is a sticky in this forum to provide you with details on how to root.

(Universal One Click Root is one I have used - simple and easy)

Yeah i downloaded xtrSense from XDA. After doing more research and getting input from you guys, this seems to be the type of ROM that is best for me.

Just curious will my phone now be the 2.2 build?

No, it's still 2.1. There really aren't many differences between 2.1 and 2.2. As of now, there are no feature-complete Sense-based 2.2 builds for the Eris.

Ok one more question. I ended up rooting last night with (jcases) universal one click method. I only flashed the rootme.zip file. I did download xtrSense 4.65 and have it sitting on the root directory of my SD as we speak.

My question is this. If i decide to wipe my phone today and then flash the xtrSense ROM, will it be just a quick simple process to flash to a different ROM at anytime (say I hate it or something). Is the process as simple as downloading a different ROM, (lets say a Kaos Froyo) moving it to the root directory of my SD, wiping my phone and then flashing the new ROM.

IS it ok to try out a bunch of different ROM's? From what i have read it seems to be as simple as that.

First, you should make a nand backup of your current setup, that way you have a known-good configuration to go back to in case things go wrong at some point.

Yes, flashing a new ROM is a fairly quick and painless process. That said, in MY opinion there is a bit more to do than flash the new ROM. Here are the steps that I take any time I flash a new ROM, from start to finish it takes me about 45 minutes or so.

1) Using Titanium Backup I back up all user apps and system data on the phone.
2) Sync with AppBrain
3) IF I think I want to come back to this point, I create a nand backup.
4) flash the new ROM
5) Restore my 'must have' apps and data, and set my home screens to look 'right'

At (4) you have a fully functional phone, though it may not look just like you want it to yet, that's what (5) does.
And (6), which can go on for days, play with the various settings of the new ROM to see what it can do that makes me say 'wow', or 'hmm' or 'humph'. :)

You can keep several nands on your phone at any one time.
You can keep several ROM zip files on your phone at any one time.

Yes, you can try out as many different ROMs as you want. In fact to MY way of thinking that's the joy in having a rooted phone.

Ok so I am assuming that Titanium Backup and APP Brain are purchased from the Market?

Is the Nand Backup done through the bootloader?

Forgive my ignorance?

Titanium Backup has both a free and a paid version, the paid version allows 'batch' restoring, and because of that I'd say it's worth the few bucks to get the paid version. Otherwise when you restore programs and/or data you have to restore them one at a time.
AppBrain is free.
They are both available in the Market.

A Nand Backup is done in Recovery, the same place you'd go flash a new ROM, just a different option on the menu.

Yes, though Appbrain is free in the market.

Not from the bootloader - from Recovery, the same place that you flash ROMs. There is a menu item for backup/restore.

As for Titanium, by the way, with the paid version I have it scheduled to back up all user apps every night, so I can just wipe and flash, install Titanium, and I'm ready to restore.

By the way, I am fairly certain that xtrSENSE will not require a data wipe if you flash over stock. You can get xtrSENSE installed with all of your apps and data in place. However, I'd still back everything up first, just in case it doesn't work and you need to do a data wipe and start from scratch.

By the way, many people simply reinstall apps from the market without doing the Titanium restore. I just restore because it saves me from having to authenticate with online services that have user name/password combos stored on the phone. If you do a data wipe, the first time that you go into the market all of your apps - free and paid - will be listed in the "Downloads" section the first visit to the market, and you can just install everything that you want, one after the other, so long as you stay in the market until you are done.

Isn't it nice that Doogald and I give essentially the same answers to questions. :)

Yeah I definetlely appreciate all the help. I think for now the Rom that I flashed (which is the rootme.zip) will be sufficient. I really like the way my phone is setup now. Now that I have a rooted ERIS I would really like to see how to take some of the lag out of the phone. I'm sure a few more days of looking around on here and I will find out some other cool things that I can do now.

One thing I do want to point out is I installed Wireless Tether from the market today and can anyone say AWESOME! I have been using Easy Tether for over a year and it has been nothing but a headache. Connection always drops etc......
But since I have been connected with the wireless tether i have had a solid connection since i first tethered (about 3 hrs now). I highly recommend this APP.

Thanks for all the help!
