Which SMS app do you use?

Hi everyone!

I am brand new to Android, having just moved from an old BlackBerry Curve to an Evo Shift 4G. I love the Evo Shift!

Anyway I don't love the text msg app, and was wondering what other Evo users are using for texting. I'm debating downloading Go SMS or Handcent however both have mixed reviews, so I wanted to talk directly to other Evo users rather than general Android users!

Thanks in advance!

I was using the stock messaging app for the longest time and recently for the past few months have been using Handcent and I have to admit it's pretty cool, it's really customizable, tons and tons of options and you can design the way your conversation list looks, bubbles, fonts, colors, pretty much everything. and it also has a lot of different options as well. The only con is it sometimes force closes but it starts back up really quickly. And it's a little bit slower than the stock messaging app.

The best thing about android is you can try any one you want, and keep the one you like. I used handcent for the longest time, but since last week I have been using the stock messaging app, and I actually like it...

Hi Sajmonides,

When you say slower, do you mean slower app on the phone itself, or slower to send and receive the text messages?

I guess I'm just worried, coming from BlackBerry, where if you downloaded a bad app it would sometimes cause errors on the phone that remained even after the app was removed ("uncaught exception >=6") for example lol. So I'm afraid to download a bunch of apps on my brand new phone and cause problems.. I don't know if this is something I need to worry about with Android or not?

I meant little bit slower to load for example when you click the messaging icon on handcent, it can take like a second to load sometimes, while the stock messaging up is always instant.

Handcent!! I tried GO SMS which they're the closest imitation of handcent but with no .gif file support so I keep good ole handcent..

Are you using a task killer? You shouldn't be, but if you are, it is probably closing the app forcing you to reopen it.

Thanks everyone. I downloaded Handcent and I really like it. LOTS of customization options, I think I've spent an hour customizing colors on everything. Maybe too much customization lol.

No, I'm not using any task killers. It doesn't happen really that often but every now and then it force closes, but fortunately it re-opens within seconds and it's good for next few days

Do you have a lot of messages? You should go through and delete them every week or 2. It helps get rid of lag in the app.

I was having trouble with the native SMS shifting on me while typing. Heard about Go SMS and couldn't be happier. I've not used handcent so can't/won't comment on it.

Ditto about the native SMS shifting on me, too. I've not had that problem with Handcent. That alone makes me happy!

I tried ChompSMS, Handcent, and GO SMS Pro.

I've sided with GO SMS Pro, because it doesn't have an advertisement in sight.

handscent sucks... constantly freezes, its slow, and half my texts i try to delete freezes the phone... im rapidly losing likeness with this phone and sprint

I've been using Handcent almost since I got my phone and I have had zero issues with Handcent. Perhaps there's another app you downloaded that is causing your phone to freeze?

It is an issue when you have too many messages stored in the phone. Like I said before, you have the solution right in front of you, just be patient with it, and delete all your texts. Don't try to do them all at once, either. If it doesn't work, and keeps force closing the only thing you can really do is a factory reset. (at least that I know of) If you are rooted, you can boot into recovery and wipe data.... Good luck, and I understand that it sucks, but just delete your texts more often, and you won't have that issue.

thats stupid though i dont want to delete my texts... the phone should be able to hold them with no issue...

I just offered a solution. HTC Android phones aren't for everybody. I like them very much, but they do have quirks. I don't text nonstop, and I don't care to save my texts so it isn't an issue for me.

Use the google voice app. It can text and it stores them in the cloud. I have never had lag when using voice.
