Help While not using phone, should apps be running in Task Manager

In Task Manager right now, I have Messages, Facebook, and Settings running. But I'm not actually using those apps at this very moment. I used them within the past 15 minutes or so, though. Should they be running? Are they doing something in the background? Aren't they using up battery life?

I am running BAMF Sense 3.0 RC4.

I wrote this article that explains a lot when it comes to running and caches apps, it's a good read.
