It is set to CDMA by default. When you go into the radio menu and it force closes, it just happens to start on the GSM option. Mine, yours, and everybody else's started by default on CDMA.
I was one of the first people to post this tip on here, and while I agree with what you've said here, I disagree that it does nothing (in my case).
After reading a lot of "it does nothing" replies, I decided to reboot without making the change. And what I noticed, on my phone, which no one here can dispute is the following....
In my house where I get at least 3 bars of signal all the time, without the change my Time Without Signal number would be quite high (~40%). After the change, in the same spot, my Time Without Signal remains at 0%.
So, until someone explains that, I'll stay soundly on the "it helps some people" side of the house.
And besides, it takes maybe 30 seconds to do this after each reboot (which don't happen that often).
