Root Why a new ROM

No Similar Topics so that's good. But I have an Evo on Sprint, rooted to remove the damn sprint apps and wi-fi tether. Those are now working, and I am following some tweets and I am reading about cyanogen (CyanogenMod-6.1 for Evo: Now with 100% more FM V6.1.2 (12/30/2010) - CyanogenMod Forum)

My question is really a high basic level, what benefit is it? I have the ROM manager, and ran the backup, so can I install this ROM, then revert back if things just don't work? Also, as the title says, what is the benefit?

Do things like the android market still work, what about apps that were purchased, etc.?

I guess I am just looking for a high level page to read or simple response to see if it's a good move ....

Thanks ....

Assuming you did a correct full Nandroid back up then yes, you can revert back to what you have right now without issue. You can create as many as you want as long as you have the storage capacity on your SD card. I currently have 4 of them.

For your ? regarding apps still working. Most if not all apps should still work once you change roms. I dont think i ever ran into an issue with an app not working once changing roms.

As for a benefit of switching roms, some make the phone faster, others allow for better "higher" level customization and others have removed bloatware and then put in other apps that Root users typically use. Just need to read the change log and whats included in it.

With CM however just be aware that if you have 4G in your area then you will NOT be able to use it once flashing this. They have yet to get it to work on this ROM.

Another that people like a lot is Myns (Warm 2.2). I havent tried it yet but will be later tonight. At the moment I have EVOzone - Riptide.

Just remember, read the change log and whats been removed/ added and always ALWAYS back up right prior to flashing.

Great simple response. In parallel I kept reading as well, man did Rom manager make it easier. So as of now, googling around, Myns does seem to be the crowd favorite, so that is downloading now (slow, but still downloading).

I will do a little more reading, and I am trying to just gather a bit more as to what the ROM is vs. the actual OS. I went from a windows guy to a linux guy for years so do understand a lot of the concepts, and by the time the download is done I should know, but it seems you restart using the new kernel and ROM w/o a duel boot option, but the amount of changes you can do looks sweet....

Thanks again ..
