Help Why am am not in my phone??!!??

Hello, I upgraded from my much loved Hero to a Sensation which I an really happy with, except for one little niggle. You can see what the problem is within in that sentence. My Sensation's predictive text doesn't know the word "am". To type "am" I have to switch off xt9 or type the letters separately and confirm each one.

Now you would think, don't be silly, just use Add Word. Yes, I did Add am but it refuses to remember it or allow it. It's no big deal although it catches me out every time, but why does such a clever phone not know one of the most basic words in the English language? Does your Sensation know the word "am"?

My Sensation knows the word am :/ So that's rather different. Does it change the word to something different when you type am?
Thank you :) How strange that one phone does and the other doesn't know the word. My Sensation thinks I want an. It also offers co cm confirm and any ...
plus fifteen other possibilities. All this relates to using the phone pad style keyboard. If I hold the phone sideways and use the big qwerty keyboard it will type am, but I generally use the phone pad keyboard as I got used to it from years of non-smart phones.

Hmm yeah I use the QWERTY keyboard you see, maybe that particular keyboard setting just doesn't like am. I find the QWERTY a lot easier to use than the other option, although I found it weird to use at first after years of using the phone pad style, I quickly became used to it :)

Yes I have been trying to remember to go with the qwerty one. I am trying the horrible compact keyboard temporarily here and it can do the word am properly, so it must be only the phone pad one that's not right. I will have to try using qwerty all the time. Thanks very much for checking with your phone.

Yuk this compact key pad is hideous!

Try using other keyboards from the Market. I have recently started to use Swiftkey X and am impressed with it - better than HTC's stock keyboard. The predictions are much nearer what you want. I bought it when it was on the 10p offer, so not sure how much it is full price. There is a free version you could try.

i was about to say the same thing - swiftkey is awesome
there's a 30 day trial, tho' the full version only costs like 1-2 of your preferred currency
unlike the default keyboard, swiftkey does predictions before you type 1 letter, based on the preceding word, plus it learns from your input gradually (as well as your existing messages, mails etc. if you allow it)

Thanks very much for that idea. I am giving swiftkey x a try now. It's quite impressive with predictions and even makes sense of my typing :) I might well stay with it.

I use to run touchpal and that has never had a problem with any predictive text, plus just yesterday I flashed the rom again to fix a few issues and am using the sensation 12 key input and my phone has no problem with the word am.

all you have to do is type "am" and then across the top of the keyboard where it says "am" and other suggested words, press "am", and it will be saved.

I will try that one too. The thing is, I do like the stock Phone Pad style keyboard because its layout and key spacing and sizes are just right for me. However this is only a little niggle and some curiosity about how such a basic word is non existent in these circumstances.

Yes but it never suggests "am". It doesn't know the word, doesn't save the word when I try to Add Word and it won't print it on the screen despite seemingly saving it. This is all only in the Phone Pad keyboard mode where it flatly refuses to acknowledge that the word "am" exists.

Change to the qwerty keyboard and do the steps I said above, then it should work for you, just tried it on mine

I bought Swiftkey when it was one of the 10p specials the other week. I'm very impressed. My typing is terrible on my phone, a combination of man sized fingers and dyslexia. The stock keyboard and prediction was OK, but I'm a convert to Swiftkey. It's already able to predict almost whole sentences, a word at a time, my texting speed has improved no end and posting on forums and Facebook is much less error prone.
