Help Why can't my Gear S2 control the music players on my HTC One M8?

My phone is an HTC One M8 and I just went out and bought the Samsung Gear S2. I've set up the connection between the two devices and everything seems to be syncing correctly via bluetooth, I've even added new apps and watch-faces using the gear app on my phone.

The issue I'm having is that I wanted to be able to control the music player on my phone from the watch (google music specifically but I've also tried pandora and the music player that comes on the phone).

When you go into the music part on the watch, I see where you toggle back and forth between playing music from the S2 itself or controlling the music playing on your phone from the current player being used (I've seen it done between the gear and a galaxy) - and when I have it set to phone nothing seems to happen, there is just a little phone icon and it says "unknown" next to it underneath the play button.

Is this simply because I have an HTC phone instead of a Samsung phone? Or is there maybe a setting that can be changed somewhere? Thanks in advance for any insight! I'm so bummed out that this feature doesn't seem to be working.

Because you have an HTC and not a Samsung. Samsung uses a lot of proprietary connections and apps, which is likely the reason. You'd have better luck using one of the generic smart watches.
