Why do I want Google Voice??!!

I have a question about GV. When I go to place a call using GV the GV dialer does not appear instead the regular htc sense dialer comes up. Does anyone know how to fix this?

No, you can't. Google Voice is not a VOIP service.

You can use a Google Voice number in conjunction with other services to create a VOIP session, but Google Voice can't be used for WiFi calling.

um yes u can... by using it with a sipdroid and something else ive been reading about it but i cant find the one i was gonna use since the other ones are old

You're thinking of Gizmo5. (I have it.)

That said: Google Voice isn't itself a VOIP service -- Gizmo5 is. Google Voice plays nicely with Gizmo5, but currently Google Voice does not offer VOIP calling. They will call your VOIP phone if you want, but that does not make them VOIP themselves.

Hope that helps clear it up a bit!

i didnt say it did it i said you take steps to get it to work... believe me dude i know what gizmo5 is and there are ways to get it to work.... google is your friend search... im trying to find the right one again ( i never said it could be done easily just that you can)

You can use Google Voice for texts and still make calls with your verizon number. I have it set so everytime i make a call it asks me if i would like ot make the call with google voice or not.

For this to work do people have to sent text messages to my GV number but call my Verizon number? Is it possible to still use my verizon number for free texting using GV?

How come I was able to sign up for this without getting any sort of an invite?

Edit: Nevermind, just now saw the posts on page 3 stating that you no longer need invites.

My settings are set to have it not notify me via sms text when I recieve a voicemail, yet it does it everytime. I get a voice notification, 3 sms texts, and an email everytime. It's aggravating.

Does anyone know how to turn off text notifications even though I have unelected the box?

Well I like it because it can block any contact or random number of your choosing. So say for example you have a telemarketer bugging you. Well just set up a contact, call it (lets say) Tele Block. Now you can configure in GV that whenever you receive a call from that contact they will get the block call message: Tone..Tone

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but Google Voice simply is not a VOIP service. The guides you're referring to have you create an account on a service like gizmo or SIPgate or any of a lot of other VOIP services.

You can't initiate a phone call without communicating with the phone provider that you wish to do so. GV doesn't support SIP connections, so how do you bring up a phone call without dialing a phone number? The answer is, you don't. You have to dial a phone number to initiate a GV session. In order to dial a phone number without using minutes, you have to use a separate VOIP service that will initiate a VOIP data connection with your phone, and then dial through GV (or vice versa: someone dials your GV number, and something has to initiate a VOIP session with your phone).

The issue isn't that Google can't transmit voice over IP, it's that there is no way to initiate a phone call with GV using only IP packets - Google isn't set up to receive such packets.

You may be looking for these excellent guides on the subject:

They both have you sign up with a service that can provide a SIP connection, and then will dial or receive calls through that.

You want it b/c the google government wants you wanting it. :)

I couldn't even get it to recognize my phone number... waiting for the next update to reinstall.

I have been messing with voip on my Dinc for a few days now.I think I finally have it all setup and working for both incoming and outgoing calls. I bought the Gizmo5 acct for 5 bucks on ebay. I make outgoing calls with one of the gv call back apps. The main pain is having to get everyone to start using the new gv# instead of my old cell number.Seeing as goggle is going to be around for awhile I think this move is worth it.:)

I've seen that widget, but are you sure it does that? When the person puts in their number to connect them to you, Google might call them "from" your number, so they then have your number on their caller ID.

I haven't tested, but it seems logical enough that Google might do it.

I wouldn't have made that claim without testing it myself. Using my wife's phone, the number that calls the person initiating the call is some non-local number. We confirmed that my number was never revealed.

I wish that I could default certain users to use Google Voice and default other's to use my Verizon #.

ie: Always call my boss with my Verizon number but always dial my wife with Google.

Currently, you choose to default all calls to one or the other.

I'm pretty sure there are some apps in the Market that can do this. I would very much like this feature too(built in). I would set all VZW to use my phone, everyone else GV.

If you figure it out, will you let us know? I've searched on a ton of keywords trying to find something that would do this but have come up empty handed (probably because those same keywords are features of the program itself).

I'm pretty sure it was Flex Dialer (they have free/pro) That works with GV and has an exclusion list. I can't find the thread that talked about it, but I know I've seen it somewhere (likely here)
