Why do I want Google Voice??!!

For those unhappy with the transcriptions from GV, you should check out YouMail.

Hi. I was trying to reach Derek. This is Jim. I believe I spoke with you yesterday about a tree. I got caught up on a job today. Just wanted to check and see if it would be okay to stop in tomorrow on my way through just to take a look at it, see how big the stump is and how much you got to clean out. If that's okay, you can give me a call or I'll just swing in tomorrow. My number's 222-3327. Thank you.

Google Voice - Android app on AppBrain

Install it, set it up and make sure you check "synchronize inbox" in settings/sync and notifications.
When you send a text do it through the app and when people text you using your GV number they will arrive in GV, not Verizon.

Not sure what this means I don't have a settings/sync and notifications or a "synchronize inbox" . Are you talking about the settings on the menu button or some setting in GV?

I use GV for 2 reasons.
(1) I can give my customers a cell phone number without giving them my actual VZW number
(2) I set my GV number in my friends and family circle so anyone calling my GV number is a free call for me. :-)

Is it free?

The settings in the GV app on your phone (the link I provided). That allows messages to be pushed, you get them faster.

Do they take longer than normal text? I ask because I just unchecked the "send text to this phone" like the other poster said and I didn't get the text that I sent to my Google number. That option was checked BTW.

I have noticed on occasion that there is a bit of a delay, never more than 2 minutes though.

But it's free. Besides, if someone really needs to get a hold of me they better not be sending texts anyway.

Sorry if this is obvious...but if someone calls my google voice number. And I pick up, does it use my Verizon cell mins? How about if I call using google voice? Do you have to even have a talk plan to receive a call thru google voice on my cell phone?

I'd like to know this also but I'd add:What if some one calls my GV# but I pick it up on the land line? Does that count against my cell minutes? I'm thinking GV is a land line provider of some sort so unless they call my cell its not going to count against my VW minutes. ??

Vegas .........Someone has said if you have a Friends and family plan you can add the GV # as a friend and then all calls to and from are free.

as for needing a talk plan: I would imagine if you didn't have a talk plan your phone calls wouldn't come through to you cell. You can have it ring land lines though and you don't need a cell for GV.. But with out t alk plan VW isn't going to let you ring your (no service) cell.

Yes, uncheck Receive text messages on this phone or they'll still come as texts (counted by Verizon) and to your GV inbox.

Damn where's the manual for this thing? :o

Google also says that while they send it using data that some carriers still would count the incoming. Have you actually killed your VW text plan?

As anyone totally ditched their TEXT option with VW and still are able to send and recieve texts??

Ok I unchecked " Receive text messages on this phone" and at first thought it wasn't working (I thought the weren't coming though) turns out the people that were supposed to be texting me (for testing) didn't LOL

After testing it again it looks like as long as I don't send a text to my actual phone number it by passes VW (makes sense). Cool!!

Now I am in the process for getting all my contacts to change my number. That's not a big deal I'm more concerned with making the ones that use text to use my GV#. I guess if I cancel the text plan that would do it. Does anyone know if you can completely shut off text messaging? I don't want to receive any if they don't come from my GV#

Yes, you can call Verizon (you can't do it online) and request that they disable texting completely. I've done that because I was getting texts from complete strangers and having to pay for them. I haven't used GV for texting yet though.

i paid some one 20 bucks to get my gv invite. In my opinion it was worth it because i get free calls/texting which saves me 20 bucks for one month of verizon texting(BS)...but im willing to give them out for 10 bucks a pop email me at wilbu1j@gmail.com or text gv 919 617 1871

later

Really not a good idea to post your email and phone number like that.

Crawlers will catch that in a heartbeat.

With GV, if you are talking on your cell phone, it's using your minutes (incoming or outgoing). If the GV call comes in and you pick it up on a different phone, it's not using your cell minutes.

Pretty simple.

How did you configure this?

Yeah how did you do that.

Anyways I see that Frontier Communications Corp is suing Google over Google voice. Seems their pissed that Google is doing it for free, oh and of course they are infringing on their patent. It seems they like charging upwards to 1.00 per call. wooo

Maybe Google will buy them.

I still use my Verizon number and when I don't answer their message goes into my google voice mail account and sends it to my gmail acct. When I get the email I can read it or listen to the message. Add your google voice number to you F&F and you get free sms texting. Great program!
I signed up today, being that you no longer need an invite, but have a question. I had someone call me on my GV number and all of the above worked like a charm. But, when they called my verizon number, my usual verizon voicemail, etc, is what happened. Was something different supposed to happen?

doesn't having a data plan for an android phone by default give you unlimited texts? I got unlimited texts with my Verizon data plan so don't see the big draw to GV for texts.
I read EVERY google voice thread and have had this same darn question!!! I am so glad I wasn't the only one. If you have an unlimited data plan, aren't texts free? Mine are.

How do you make a call from your cell phone, choosing the GV number??
