Why do I want to root?

cloyd

Newbie
Ever since I got this machine, I have been wanting to root. I have been patient, and am reading. I still don't know enough to start the job. I'm barely techie enough to install Linux on my pc to dual boot with windows, but I see a lot of different language here I didn't see in the Linux (Ubuntu) world.

But anyway, I have been asking myself, why do I want to root?
I'm used to being root, and just resent someone saying they know better than me.
Is this sufficient reason?

Will root make better security possible?

Are there apps that I'd really enjoy that require root?
I'm not sure about this.

I'd really like to get rid of many factory installed apps. They are just clutter and they take up room other apps I'd enjoy could use.

Are these sufficient reason to take the risk to root?
What other advantages to rooting?
I'd like to hear from others.

Backing up your entire phone along with apps and their data is another although app restore is now finding its way into the newer android versions without root. If you have any desire to run custom roms, root starts to become much more attractive. Also, you can most generally run newer OS versions than what non rooters have access to although that depends somewhat on how well your phone is supported by the development community.

The main reasons users root are: remove bloatware, extend battery life by underclocking the cpu, improve framerate in 3d games by overclocking the cpu, install Wifi Tether for free mobile hotspot capability, and install custom ROMs for a complete overhaul of the interface (beyond what custom launchers can offer). If you find a few of these reasons appealing then you want to root

Thanks to all of you. There is one other reason. I'd like be able to install some distro of linux and run open or libre office (I've seen this in the play store, but they all require root), though I am learning I can do quite a bit with pro office suite 6.

Way to do your research, that's always a great first step. If you know the risks and feel like it is for you, go for it.

If you have a mainstream device (Nexus, GS3, One X), developers will have plenty of custom ROMs available for you. CyanogenMod, Team Awesome, and AOKP are all worth trying. You can have a new phone each week if you want. Check out the device specific forums here and over on XDA.
