Why do people call the epic ugly?

I think the epic is kind of ugly. It reminds me of all of those other cheap samsung sliders. However the front of the epic 4g is done elegantly, and though I think the general shape of the captivate looks better, the curves are needed in the slider phones I imagine, so you don't have sharp edges poking you when you slide it out and stuff. The phone is okay looking and functional.

epic reminds me of my TP2.(sexy phone).big reason i opted for the epic instead of the evo...all my smartphones have been htc,..untill aug 31st....

I agree, the Captivate is much better looking. As far as looking like a cheap slider, I don't think most folks will realize its a slider until it is opened.

Considering I have only had one slider, The Samsung Moment, I can't say it has ever felt cheap. It has been a solid phone for me, with everything still being tight and smooth a year later.

In the end you are right, functionality won out over form in this device.

I agree that the Captivate is the better looking of the Galaxy S line of phones.

"Beauty" my friend "is in the eye of the beholder". To me - the "beauty" of it is the physical keyboard, and the functionality. And - I don't think it looks all that bad.

I don't think it's ugly so much as plain and boring. It looks like pretty much every other qwerty keyboard smartphone by either HTC or Samsung. Ditto to the Captivate being the much better looking phone.

It does seem pretty generic to me, but since I've never really cared about how sexy my phone looks as opposed to how well it does what I want it to, I'll survive with my plain jane phone full of goodness inside.

I wasn't refering to the moment persay, I was more refering to the cheap sliders. I mean if you look at other carriers they have a slider or 2, not a lot. If you look at sprint, they have 3 low end sliders all by samsung alone. The Seek, Exclaim, and Restore. The Moment and Intercept are more like the mid to high end sliders along with the Epic 4G, but when I see a phone like the epic 4g, even if I like it, which I do, I can't help but think of those 3 low end sliders, and be reminded of the samsung glyde and other phones from a while ago.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For me I like the looks of some prototype phones I've seen in the internet, such as:

1. Dell Flash
2. Dell Thunder
3. Dell Aero
4. HTC wildfire
5. HTC Legend

I also like the looks of the iPhone 4.

For me, a real aluminum body (or stainless steel) combined with rubber/plastic or any other polymer really do look great.

Back to topic. I do think the Epic's looks outdated, almost looks like a revised Moment. But all that thought is gone once the screen comes alive.
