why do pictures get compressed in text?

as the title says, why do picture attachments in texts automatically get compressed? and why does it send it as a slideshow instead of just a simple mms picture text?

my old palm pre used to send the pic exactly how it was taken on the phone. my evo shift keeps compressing my pics to 30kb-45kb when texting them to various people. my brother says the image quality on his end is sometimes great, sometimes pretty bad.

can anything be done to change this? (not compress, and simple picture mms text instead of slideshow)

This is due to Sprint network not your phone.
Since you have a nice smart phone a way to send full resolution pictures is if you send them using Gmail.
Just find out the carrier's email address format of the person you are trying to send the picture
Ex. Verizon~~> phonenumber@VZWPix.com
And Also Ask your contacts to send you pictures to your Gmail address.
