Root Why do some ROMs improve battery life?

Probably not such a bright question but I have not been able to find a direct answer. Is it simply the ROMs get rid of bloatware that runs in the background and use power? Or is there something else going on?

TIA

I think the less crap that runs on the system partition the better off you are. Also size matters, imo, but it's not the be all and end all. I have 2 roms I use, one is aosp at 66 meg and the other is sense at 240 meg. Both get great battery life so go figure.

I think kernels have more of an effect.

I also think there is essentially no good data on it anyway--no real testing, only anecdotal stuff, so some of it is probably placebo.

Yeah I think the kernel has a lot to do with it, more than rom in some cases (AOSP rom vs AOSP rom)
