Root Why do you want ROOT???

Overclocking and froyo. I have overclocked my Droid to 1ghz, and its literally night and day faster than stock. On the few times I had to unroot and take it back to stock, I found it almost unbearable to use at the stock speed. Once overclocked, its a super speed monster that to me seems should be stock. Stock to stock, my wifes moto devour seemed snappier and smoother than my droid. But now, it loads apps and whatnot in the blink of an eye. Rooting is TOTALLY worth it just to overclock. Nevermind all the great roms that are coming. I cant wait to see what an overlocked inc with this snap dragon processor is capable of. 2ghz maybe? Can't wait, too excited.

I have a question about root, if I choose to root my phone is there an option to restore back to factory settings later if i choose to?

Is this really going to be a good idea? It seems the phone runs a little on the warm/hot side as it is, don't we take the serious chance of overheating our devices... like beyond the point of repair?

This is just a thought or observation based on how hot the phone "seemed" to run at first.

my incredible doesnt run warm.

I waited and waited and waited for a nexus one on verizon. Did I get it? After root, a little waiting, and some custom roms, I will have my nexus one on verizon.

Sent from my HTC Drooooiiiid Incredible.

Haha same here :D

This is my biggest question and the only thing keeping me on the fence about rooting, can someone please answer this, and also tell just how easy it is to go back and forth if needed?

Root - un-root, back to factory. I'm new to this but once it's spelled out in terms that I get...and can get back to factory easily if necessary, I want to do this. I've already managed to figure out how to change my boot animation using the instructions here, so I think I'm kinda getting the whole adb, SDK stuff but I'm sure there's much more to it than the work involved in the boot animation. A "Rooting for Dummies" tutorial would be great. I'm patient. :)

i dont have my dinc yet, so that would explain my ignorance on the subject.. What Im getting from this thread is that my dinc must be rooted in order to get some of these awesome wallpapers? If so that sucks, because Im just a good ol' boy from alabama. Im not computer illiterate, but my tech knowledge isnt too deep either!

Heres my reasons:

1. Its a challenge for me to do and I love playing around with technology and learning more.

2. So I can use new roms when they are realeased.

3. Wireless tethering for business trips.

4. Remove City ID.

I would do it to know I have full control of something I paid a lot of money for. I would not tinker too much with it but I want to know what my phone is doing at all times.

Not to mention you can more than likely improve performance by shutting off unneeded apps.

If I root and get the WiFi Tethering, would verizon know and try to charge me extra?

I would wait and see if someone says it happened to them. but more than likely I doubt it would happen. Besides if you use wireless tethering without going crazy on your plan's limits who would know?

My main reason was to just have the freedom of deleting some of the garbage applications that came with the phone that i would never use. Also having hte phone "open" for any new and exciting ROM's or apps that require root access.

After rooting and removing the system apps that I dont need, I did a nice factory restore on my phone, and it is running smooth as silk :)

(factory restore doesn't remove superuser privis)

I want the multiple exchange support that's coming with 2.2. One of HTC's support drones answered a question in their support forum stating that HTC's sense email client that will come with their custom version of 2.2 wouldn't support multiple exchange accounts.

I want my separate personal and work calendars, dang it!

I also think it would be cool to have a truly "stock" android installation, but sense doesn't bother me enough to go root just to get rid of it.

I want root so that I can load custom roms. The sense UI has some great features and looks great but the face book and twitter apps are clunky and short on features. It seams like you lose as much as you gain with them, yes you can look at one contact and see everything he has going but if you are using google voice you don't see the SMS in the sense UI, and facebook on sense is only good for updates to status everything else is harder so get to. I would be much happier with a vanilla 2.2 witch I never thought I would say back when I was 1st leaving WM for Android.

BT Voice dialing + proper BT 2.1 interface support are going to be great. If that means ditching Sense I have no problem with that. Having a rooted device also means Verizon can't lock out features they don't want you to have (Tethering for one)

+1

I'd like to be able to do a FULL backup of the phone (and ditch city id)

Great info to know! Thanks for sharing. :)

I would have to agree with this. I love the looks of Sense UI but I don't like some of the way the integrations are done. I do wish GV was more part of it as you mentioned. I also didn't realize (before I got my phone) that there are numerous apps that give you the beautiful eyecandy (or other beautiful eyecandy) of sense without some of the quirks. Maybe I won't like how vanilla android works when I try it...but at least then it will be my choice.

Top priority for me is REAL BLUETOOTH! I bought this phone to use with an external BT keyboard. The keyboard works perfectly on N1 and Droid but won't work at all on my DInc. Why? Because I'm told that HTC used the Android 1.6 BT stack instead of 2.0+. I've been SO disappointed because of this!

If I can add Froyo, freedom to control processor speed/battery life, and open my phone up to all apps, even better. It might even make me like my phone. :)

im sure there aren't many people in my boat, but there is an issue with enterprise mschapv2 networks with open authentication where the GUI doesn't properly write the wpa_supplicant.conf file, so the primary reason i wanted root was so that i could edit this file and get wifi working at work.

Wireless tether so we can use my wife's ipad on vacation. Streaming netflix movies while on a road trip should be pretty sweet.

you let your wife purchase an Apple product? hmmmm trading your android in for an iphone next? i kid. kid. but i want to root mainly for titanium backup, nad for different versions of android if ever possible for my beloved Devour.
