Why Does Moto Bother Locking The DroidX?

I just read the DX bootloader is finally unlocked and Moto has already sent out cease and desist warnings to those releasing the details. It got me thinking about why Motorola would go to such lengths to lock the phone down and I haven't come up with anything good.

To keep users tethered to a particular app store? No, that works for Apple but Android doesn't operate that way (unless you're on AT&T). To minimize returns from fools who brick their phones? Nope, we can already to that. Because they're assholes? They might be but there's no business case for being an ass.

Then why would they lock the DX down? Where is the financial gain?

^^ my guess would be that one. poeple who mess with thier phones like they did with the OG droid are going to be in a big mess...and with the stuff i see on these and other forums, there are a LOT of people who would return a bricked phone saying it just bricked itself.

Because they can. Don't know of any other reason they would. You can say that whole idiots bricking their phone trying to flash it thing, but the people that do that are a small percentage of the total number of DX owners, so that doesn't make much sense. Seems it would be cheaper to take a bricked phone in, refurb it and resell it than to set up that whole military-grade encrytion system with the efuse. But I'm not an economist, I'm just a regular joe, what do I know....

...again. By the same ass-hat.
well he duped me good.....but to be fair, i was not interested in the DX at the first time. i will remember his name. or i will just discredit all "unlock bootloader" rumors until multiple ppl confirm it.

To protect their ip

Would you please elaborate? Regardless of what I flash on it, they made the sale and the cash on the hardware. Done deal. Yes, they went through the trouble of creating Blur but I don't see how removing that would harm them financially.

By locking the bootloader, they are performing the same move as DRM for music. Yes, you own the music, but the music distributor still owns the rights to distribute it, i.e., you can't give the music to anyone you want.

Same for Moto. This is their property, and copying it for your own use, or resell to another manufacturer, is illegal.
