Help why does my ringtone.......

Do you have a default ringtone set and then ringtones set for specific contacts?

Also, do you leave your phone out and have friends who like to play jokes on you?

Both default and specific contacts change randomly. Phone us passcode protected and all stco as far as Rom etc.

Are you using an app to select the ringtones?

I've had similar experiences when I used an app called "business tones" to change the ringtone. After a day or so it changes spontaneously to one of the default tones.
If I use the settings menu to set one of the native ring-tones, it "sticks".
I haven't a clue why, though.

Is the ringtone you're trying to use stored on your sd card? Perhaps the app you're using to set the ringtone is having a problem reading the sd card, so it reverts to one in internal memory. Or when you restart the phone, the app is trying to set the ringtone before the sd card is mounted so it can't find it and reverts to one in internal memory. Or maybe the ringtone file is too large. These are just shots in the dark b/c I've never had this happen, but things you might want to look at.

Near as I can tell, when I select a tone from Business Tones, it downloads it to the SD card.

Good ideas. I'll examine it further.

I've never used an app to get ringtones so I'm not sure where they are stored. I'd assume on the sd card. If so, the directory they are in could also be an issue. All the custom ringtones/notifications/alarm sounds that I've made and use are stored in the respective directories on the sd card under media/audio. So ringtones are in media/audio/ringtones. Notifications are in media/audio/notifications. Alarms in media/audio/alarms. When I want to set a custom sound, either the default sound in Settings>Sound or from within an app, my audio files show up in the list along with all the other stock sounds. And like I mentioned before, I've never had the sounds change spontaneously.

If you're using a third-party app to set default ringtones, you may want to check where the audio file is stored. If it's not in the directory structure that I described, create those directories, move the audio file to the respective folder and set the tone using Settings>Sound or the specific app you're using for each function, (e.g. Handcent for messaging, Gmail for email, etc.). If this is how you're doing it and they are still changing, then I'm all out of ideas.

That might have been the problem. It was storing them in a different directory. I moved a few that I like and will see how it goes.
