Root Why does the "BOOT LOOP" happen?

SyberTiger

I've got my MT rooted and have CWM v5.5.0.4 loaded. I've played around with loading some of the custom ROM located in this forum. I've noticed that sometime when I want to go back to a previous ROM that I've backup-ed using CWM that I get the dreaded "BOOT LOOP". Generally, I spend the next 20 - 30 minutes fooling around trying to get the darn MT to boot up correctly. That Motorola logo just sits there during boot up for the longest time (10 minutes) before I give up. In fact, it seems to me that only my original backup reliably restores then boots up correctly. Does anyone know why the BOOT LOOP happens? Specifically, I'm wondering why some of my backups don't boot up properly after a restore.

The only thing I can think of is that perhaps CWM v5.5.0.4 sometimes isn't backing up or restoring correcly or perhaps my process isn't correct prior to restoring or installing a new ROM zip. This is what I do:

- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- advanced/wipe Dalvik cache
- back and restore
- restore...blah, blah, blah OR -install zip from sdcard...blah, blah, blah

Can you please tell me why it is important to use v5.0.2.7? Is there something specific about that version that makes it MT compatible whereas the newer versions don't.

i really don't know, i'm just a power user....I just had a similar issue with the sharp ROM while i was using the 5.5.0.4 recovery and after i reverted back to 5.0.2.7, i was able to restore properly.

I just read your issues you were having with restore using the v5.5.04 CWM in the Sharp ROM thread. Guess I'll revert to CWM v5.0.2.7. Thanks...happy to hear I wasn't the only one thinking WTH.... :)

I've never been able to get CWM (any version) to restore a backup and boot. It always loops no matter what backup I try or what recovery I use.

I wonder if it's an issue about permissions?
I had used 5.5.x and after wiping everything out I changed the kernel and was stuck on the M again. I ran the fix permissions, restarted then ran it again and it worked. Not sure if that helped anything but would somewhat make sense.
