Why has my Galaxy A13 USB-C socket suddenly become mushy?

One day it was a crisp firm fit, and the next day it was difficult to push the plug in all the way, loose and sloppy and it comes up with 'check your charger connection' 9 times out of 10 (It still charges, but slowly) regardless of which cord I use. The data connection to PC only works sometimes too.

I did a thorough clean of the socket, some fluff came out but that made no difference. Why the sudden change?

Age is one factor, find a place that sells them.

the "sudden change" is that your phone is almost 4 years old. most phones have a lifespan of 3-4 years in which you will see things like bad battery, and things falling apart. also your model is a budget friendly phone. do not expect top quality to last very long at that price tier.

so yeah like what the others are saying. you can either get it fixed. or get a new phone. fixing the phone might be more expensive than the phone is actually worth.... so that will have to be a call that only you can make.

My point is it really was a sudden change, literally from one day being fine to the next day being difficult to push in and make good contact. Not gradual with age, sudden.

Strictly a guess: Considering it suddenly refused to make solid contact I'm guessing whatever was designed to hold the port firmly in place gave up. It might have been the pocket lint that limited the depth the C cable would go into the port and the resulting extra user pressure used was too much for it.
Pointed out by others, the phone is nearing it's expected life cycle. It might just have been it's time.
