Why I Couldn't Live Without My Desire

Anybody care to list any apps that they find mega, mega useful. I don't mean a different text messaging app or a battery life indicator or anything like that - more like calendars or organisers or reminders, stuff like that.

Reason I ask is that I work in an office and obviously have access to the internet and emails all day and when I'm at home my laptop is always on perched on the edge of my settee - ergo I hardly ever need internet access on my phone.

While the Desire is a great little gadget I've come to realise that for someone like me, who really only uses their phone for text messages and calls, a lot of what the phone can do is redundant. Sure I quite like having all my photos on it and a calendar with reminders always with me, a to do list and maybe a shopping list etc but I'm struggling to think of what else I need it for really and I may as well go back to my little Nokia 6300.

So come on - tell me why you simply couldn't do without your Desire! :)

E-mails mostly, phone calls obviously and news feeds. I own an iPod Touch which i used to use to receive my emails and news feeds on. The only bad thing about it is you need Wi-Fi access nearby, else it wont work. Now I have a nice phone who can do all this anywhere I am and have all this info with me.

EasyMoney - I'm crap at keeping track of my money and remembering to pay bills. This app has saved my life on more than one occasion (well not actually saved my life but you know what I mean)

6 months ago I bought a Compaq Mini 311 with Mobile Broadband/GPS module so that I could browse the net etc, I wish I'd bought my Desire first! The Desire is just so much quicker and easier to use.

I like a jack of all trades in my pocket. Whatever i want, whenever i want it, i can get it. :)

This pretty much sums it up for me as well.

On the rare occasion that the missus drives, I can browse the internet, check my Facebook and Twitter accounts, correspond with people via text and e-mail check the news courtesy of the BBC News, use various apps such as the engadget app. The above all comes in handy if we are shopping and she is spending ages in a woman's shop. I can sit outside and occupy myself for a short while if I wish.

If I am at home and we seem to have mislaid the TV guide, and don't fancy bringing up the full screen guide on the television, I can check the TV Guide on my phone.

It's little things like the above which make the Desire a very handy tool in general day to day life.

My only criticism of the Desire and some of its apps is that they are not as fully functional as their Blackberry and iPhone counterparts.

Eg. At the moment I can't get the Twitter App to "Sync Data". I can tick the box, but it won't stay ticked.

The big boon to me is the odd internet/email access in bed through the night via fast wifi. I have a laptop and netbook but they are too large and cumbersome for this purpose when I just need a quick check and reply. My previous phone was no where near as good for this.

I really dig that Movieflix app. Great stuff.

It's having the internet in my pocket 24/7, its being able to search for anything I want, anywhere I need to go and being able to find it on a map and get directions to it or navigate directly. It's having voice search, its being able to msg, email, Facebook, call any contact with less than 3 clicks. It's the screen and the sheer gadget-ness. It's awesome.

to be honest, nothing new for me has been listed in this thread. Ive had a smartphone before. Blackberry. It was very good.

What sets teh desire apart from that though, is the vibrant screen, the feel in my hand and I have fallen in love with performing the motions I need to use the phone. Sometimes I pick it up just to scroll around the screens and in and out of apps.

Thats really, really sad.

If that's sad then I must be too :D I have all my screens as colourful as possible even though it probably doesn't help the battery life. It is so vibrant :)

I hardly use my netbook anymore as my Desire copes effortlessly with everything I used to use my netbook for.

I use a tv guide app sometimes, there I can set reminders on my phone for programmes.
A live football scores app for when I'm at a game and need to know what's happening in other games.
EBay on my phone is good because work block it.
Orange Wednesday app - can check what's on and get my code through the app.
A few handy guitar apps for when I lose/forget a tuner, metronome or fancy looking up some new scales.

Much as has already been said above, but the real bonus for me is Sat Nav. I dont need or want a dedicated unit cluttering up the car and i find that Co Pilot and/or Google do the job I need.

i only use my laptop now when i need/want to preserve the desire battery life.... says it all really

I use it for tonnes of little things. None of them are essential, none of them are fundamental to my life, but lots of little things together = a better quality of life, slightly.

My entire calendar is on it
It is my entertainment on my 1.5 hour each-way commute every day (games, RSS reader and internet)
It has given me directions occasionally when I can't find my destination and don't have my TomTom on me (Google Maps)
Browsing games/DVDs in shops, the barcode scanners have saved me a few duff purchases either overprices, or rubbish (Goggles, Barcode scanner, shopper etc)
I've used it to find a decent local pub on walks (Aloqa)
I use it to phone my sister abroad for nothing when away from home (fring)
I use it to show friends my photos (flickr section of photos)
I use it to find nearby geocaches when I haven't had time to prepare (c:geo)
I use it to feel guilt about all the things I should have done but haven't ot round to yet (Astrid)
Oh yeah - and I phone people on it too

I do the same. I'll be scrolling through the home pages, then realise, you know, there's been no calls/texts, what am i doing?? :D

And yes, it's my first smartphone, so i've an excuse. ;) Probably not after over 2 months though. :)

- Builtin Apps: Maps/Calendar/Browser/Music/etc etc
- National Rail + London Tube apps (I travel down south a lot)
- Games (long train and bus journeys can be boring!)
- Bump (exchange pictures, contacts, apps with Desire/iPhone users simply by bumping your phones together)
