Help Why is all email sent by Gmail?

Swell

Lurker
I'm new here and have recently got myself an HTC Desire. I love Android!

However.........I have an email problem.

I've set up a Gmail account and also a pop3 Virgin account using the Mail application. All emails I send through the Mail application send as Gmail not Virgin - even though Gmail is handled by a separate app. This is especially a problem when replying to an email coming into the Virgin account - the reply is via the Gmail address, not the Virgin address the original email was sent to, so any follow up reply appears in Gmail not Mail.

Any ideas on how to resolve this?

You probably have set Gmail as the default reply account. Just go into the Gmail account settings in the app and remove that.

I just tried that and there's no obvious way to select a default 'Reply to' account. I've looked elsewhere e.g. settings>applications>manage applications>Mail where there is an option to clear defaults, but it's greyed out. Is there anywhere else where the default reply to address might be set?

I can't tell really as HTC Sense uses a different stock app as compared to the Samsung TouchWiz on my phone. You'll either have to wait for someone with HTC knowledge to come around this thread, or to get a third party email app like K9.

You can try-settings>accounts and sync> manage accounts then try replacing whatever is there with your preferred email account. It may work or the phone may want to only interface with Google/gmail.

I think this might be a setting in either the gmail app on the Desire or in the email app that comes with Sense UI. In any case, they should know how to get you sorted out here.

It really is strange. I've checked and my Virgin account is set as the default.

I checked the Sent folder in Mail and emails sent via Mail are reported to have been sent by the Virgin account - that is the email address shown as the 'From' address - even though the email received at the other end is from Gmail! It makes no sense at all.

I tried deleting the Google account, but I can't as I lose access to all the Google apps. I tried uninstalling Gmail but the option isn't there. I also tried selecting Force Stop for Gmail, then trying to send an email via Mail, but same deal - the email received the other end is still from the Gmail account.

Is there any way of disabling Gmail completely without losing the Google account?

I will try K9 though.

No, not really.

Try this ... open the mail app and long-press the Virgin Mobile account. Choose account settings and see what your outgoing settings are.

I just forwarded a text message, a picture and created a new email all from the default POP3 account and sent them to an unrelated email address. There is no trace of gmail anywhere on the messages. It's beginning to look more and more like a Sense issue.

I installed K9 and sent emails still go via Gmail.

I can only imagine that it is either be an issue with the SMTP settings or with Sense. Could it be that even though the settings authenticate they aren't actually sending the email, and it reverts to gmail? I don't think that's likely but has anyone used different settings successfully?

I just get the feeling that this is a system issue. Anyone experienced a similar issue? Any ideas?

The mystery is solved!

It was my SMTP settings, specifically the username. The username I entered wasn't wrong, and it authenticated ok, but i should have used the full email address as the username. Emails now go as they should. Still a mystery though. I think virgin email is now based on gmail so maybe that's why.

Thanks for all the replies!

That's good to know. FYI, Yahoo based email works similarly with the login, but if you don't include the domain with the username it fails.

Glad you got your problem resolved.
