Why is Android laggy compared with iOS?

Depends on the device. On the fire it was half an inch reserved for that taskbar the icons were not the same size but still...1/3 of the BOTTOM of the screen. Not the whole thing. It was the same size as the dock above it

I found the new settings menu overdone. Much like how many big box grocery stores have say three separate sections for snacks. I prefer the simple mom and pop approach, the settings have remained much the same since eclair, until gingerbread. Well laid out, categorized perfectly. Display, sound, date and time, the like. Now its all fragmented and three different steps to get to say clock settings when it used to be touch, tap, done. It was too much of an overhaul in one sitting, should have had a gradual evolution, not a sudden redesign of the UI with things in the wrong places (what good is having power control where the notifications are?) and the amount of extra ram and CPU required. Can you imagine a new device on GB? It would blow away ICS.

I could reinstall ICS to be specific and post better screen caps but I hated the thing that much I shudder to even touch it again. I mean weather and media controls in the LOCK SCREEN? No wonder my Fire locked up in sleep

I have weather and media controls on the lockscreen on a Galaxy S. Single core, 2 year old hardware. Just goes to show how bad the ROM you got was.

Also the screenshot depends on the device. The Galaxy Nexus for example does not have any keys. Like a tablet, its all screen. That's why those keys are needed.

I was never a fan of the Kindle fire especially the first generation ones. I agree they are laggy even if you put a custom Rom. A custom Rom makes it better but a dev can only do so much to improve a device. An IPad 3 should totally dominate the Kindle, I'd be surprised if it didn't. My Nexus 7 and galaxy tab plus are super devices, IMO. No lag or and no freezing.

1. My Tab got faster and smoother upgrading to 4.0.4
2. Notification in my Tab still has the clear all button
3. Huge virtual keys? Sounds like you got a ROM not made for your device, or something not very well made. Look at Samsung's phones running on ICS and JB. They have no virtual keys, and still have the clear all button.
4. Setting menu got changed a bit, but not too much to gripe about. Everything is still there with more functions than before/

Your picture doesn't work. Also, Samsung's stock notification area still has a clear button on ICS/JB

I have no pictures, but the HTC and Motorola versions also still has the clear button.

Too much RAM? Crashing more than GB? No it doesn't. But then again you are using a ZTE Merit. You're running a 600Mhz CPU that's 4 generations behind, no GPU that I know of, and a miniscule amount of RAM. Of course you'll crash. Its not JB's fault. Your phone just doesn't cut it anymore. The Nexus S and Xoom won't even be getting JB because Google can't guarantee a smooth experience, and you're running way worse hardware than those devices have.

PS: OTA upgrades are carrier pushed. Not Android pushed. And I like Blue. :)

The nexus s does have 4.1

I can't comment on apple products, never was interested enough to consider paying what they charge. And that tiny screen... At least it's 4 in now, but still. So I've never used one, don't know about the performance, or much about the ui.

But as far as Android 4.0 is concerned, I LOVED it. I had a phone with ics on it for a couple weeks, but had to return it due to the phones hardware having a serious bug. But I miss it so much. It DID have a clear all button in the notification menu, but I loved having the option to clear only certain ones if I wanted to. The settings weren't confusing to me at all, just more options, which I loved. And the stock music player was so much better than gingerbreads. I can't wait to upgrade again.

You can't claim Android lags based on one device, a device that's a custom version of Android from Amazon anyway. If you've not satisfied then complain to Amazon or don't buy products from them again.

If you want tablets that don't lag, try the latest Google or Asus tablets or the Galaxy S3, Galaxy S2, Asus Transformer Prime, they don't lag at all.

I won't expand that to any other devices because I don't much experience with other devices so it wouldnt be right to generalise like you've done.

I don't get It and it makes me sick. Kindle fire vs. apple ipad 3. Similar performance specs, both dual core CPUs, but when I find myself typing lengthy posts on the fire, it becomes so frustrating as the OS fails to keep up with my 80+ WPM touch-type rate that it lags or produces often misspelled results or poor performance. Or flat out crashes with a force close. I find myself in such instances whipping my ipad from the closet finding the response in comparison rather snappy, my only question is, why? Why is android, even today, with today's specs so slow?

Even the best web browser for android seems to take ages to load androidforums, when mobile safari comes up instantly.

Maybe it just your device? Why lump Android as a whole into this instead of your specific device?

Yes, but it will not officially be receiving JB 4.2 (which is great BTW)

4.1 JB has been great but 4.2 is one of the buggiest releases in quite awhile, numerous things have been broken, you can't even leave a calendar reminder for the month of December right now.

The two ROMs I tried were on a kindle fire. The Merit can't run ICS yet (thank god!) I can't use 4.x. Too much different about it for me to feel comfortable. GB does everything I ask of it and does it well with great balance. I use my phone far more often than any tablet and it does well...I can't type much but it does work. I tried two ROMs (pictures were from the first, a CyanogenMod 10 based) just to make sure it was not a faulty ROM.

Every time I spot a screenshot of ICS/JB they have virtual or soft keys. Large blue ones for home, back and multitasking.

again, a lot of the issues you are describing are ROM specific.

I have no onscreen buttons on my jb DROID DNA

4.1 = ICS
4.2 = JB

Nexus S is not going to get JB officially.

4.1 is jellybean

I understand why the fire had virtual keys. But they don't need to be STUCK on the botto and so large. On GB I relocated them to the status bar, upper left. They're not large, they're sized the same as the notification area icons are. They vanish when unused after a period of time. Android 2.3.7

My comparison was also based on how the Kindle Fire was promoted, despite the smaller screen, as competition for the iPad and even sometimes claimed to be an ipad killer. This is largely incorrect but I have used many androids. Demos, real tablets, etc. they ALL lag when typing long posts especially via the web browser. This includes demo tablets of honeycomb and yes horrid Jelly Bean which seems to inundate every new device securing my choice to never buy another android device unless it can run GB

The UI Change was too much. It tries to do too much. A lock screen needs to do one thing, lock the device or lock and prevent unauthorized use (pass code lock). There is no need to hog CPU and data to display weather or such when the device is sleeping. This also harms battery life. The notification area is just that. Notification only. Not power control and app-based widget area.

Bottom line, regardless of version the typing speed on android still lags behind iOS. You notice it if using both devices side by side like I have. Not just my personal device. Taking my ipad with me and testing a lot of newer tablets with more comparable specs.

90% of ICS/JB is useless eye candy. I won't argue about project butter since that's under the hood. That should have been it. A few behind the scene changes and maybe a theme or two, or features added but not seen until you want to. The way it comes off looking far from GB it scared me off and was so unfamiliar. Too much too soon. I won't assume that my feelings are shared but personally I despise android 4 and up. Here is an iOS element it tries to copy. The multitasking menu itself. Unnecessary plus it'd a full page variant of the iOS multi touch gesture that displays recent apps.

Many people have spent a lot of time explaining most of your issues with ICS and JB - your hardware, ROMs, etc, etc. This thread is just going in circles now since you are not about to be persuaded about much of anything.

If you refuse to run Android beyond GB then you will soon be leaving for iOS or WinPhone. Which you will likely also soon be dissatisfied with.

I have a solution. Get an iPad. You have clearly indicated that you do not like the ICS or JB UI. You are not satisfied with the performance of various Android tablets for the way you use them. You touted the virtues of iOS devices. I cannot see any other conclusion.

With regard to the Kindle fire as the iPad Killer. It beats the iPad in price and that is not even close. If that is not a good enough selling point for you then, your only option is to spend more money on one of the iPads. Not everyone is going to like Android tablets and I think you fall into that category.

I never said I hated Android or preferred iOS. sure, iOS does not lag for some reason but mainly my use is Android devices, specifically my phone and the apps that are exclusive that I use on my Kindle. I like Android's level of customization and what you get by rooting it. the iPad normally sits in my closet until something, usually involving typing, is necessary. other than that my iPad plays games that only exist on iOS. I am not sure why i'd abandon Android if I stick with GB because personally I adore GB and it does exactly what I want. there seems to be no signs of GB app support ending any time soon, and there's nothing I like about JB or ICS. so the only end result is that I keep devices capable of running GB, as all the ones for sale lately are all 4.0 and up.

Fair enough. :)

I too have an ios device (iphone 5) and the new JB super phone the DROID DNA. I've posted comments on blogs that use disqus and noticed no lag, I'm curious how a ios device works when using Chrome browser.

But..... It seems everything that needs to be said here has.

If anyone disagrees with the lock them feel free to pm me
