Help why is clockwork recovery permanent?

everywhere i read something about clockworkmod, people said it is now temporary and as soon as remove or rename the update.zip, you'd have stock recovery again (all threads about it being permanent replacement were at least around a year old). i want to explicitly point out the posting written by koush himself on xda: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734163

well, i just tried that (rename the update.zip to something else) and... no stock recovery.
can anybody tell me why that is?

good to know... very good to know. and very rarely mentioned that CWR is part of some kernels and thus starts automatically.
