Help Why is maps always running?

Ever since the new update for maps, when I go into running services, maps (network location services) is running. I stop it and it restarts. Before I could stop it, and it would not run until I open maps. Also I cannot figure out what application is trying to use this. Will it effect battery if it stays running? And what is this really trying to do? Any ideas? Thanks.

You have Lattitude enabled through G Maps?
I have rebooted my phone and have not used G Maps and I have the same thing running. I think this is a classic case of overthinking. I don't concern myself with what is running, that's what the operating system is for.

The network location services do things like cater results for searches (let's say pizza joints) to where you are at the time. I don't think it uses up juice just by runnning. The only time it would do that is when you actually do something where it needs to know where you are as it will then use your gps to find your location.

don't worry about it, unless you see it eating up your battery. Trying to keep killing it just has a more negative effect on the battery.
