Why is the HTC One S So Expensive? (UK)

As far as I can tell the current HTC One line is:

X = Top of the range
S = Midrange
V = Budget

If you go with a contract then it's a cheap phone bearing in mind the cost of my PYG contract and the Sim free phone. Got mine today on contract a lot cheaper than buying sim free and adding in my PYG contract for 24 months, figured if I pay the contract off I am way ahead of the game anyway and i'm effectively sim free.
 
The nexus isn't the desire

I seem to recall the original Desire was pretty much the original Nexus but with a touch trackball rather than a physical ball, and with HTC branding rather than Google?

Shove things into smaller casings, usually means greater costs.

But that's just evolution - and besides, that doesn't answer the main question of - why is the One X only marginally more expensive than the One S despite being of massively higher spec?

I'm adverse to signing a 24 month contract as I can't imagine wanting the same phone for so long, and I worked out you pay much more over time than you do buying the phone outright. With a SIM only contract of
 
For customers in the US, T-Mobile is offering select customers the HTC One S as a way to retain them right now. If you're not too happy with T-Mobile, this might make you a little happier..
