Why Not 1.5 GHz for OMAP4460?

The OMAP4460 was designed to run at up to 1.5GHz but they decided to run it at 1.2GHz. This was one of the key differences between the OMAP4460 and the OMAP4430, in addition to running the graphics processor at a higher speed and optimized design of the Cortex A9 to reduce power consumption.

Any speculation why they would have done this? Could be lots of reasons for this including lower cost, chip yield problems at 1.5GHz, or battery optimization, but a 25% bump in GHz could represent both a big performance boost as well as a marketing plus.

I assume we will be able to bump it well beyond 1.2 but how far it can be taken and still maintain stability has yet to be determined.
 
optimization in ICS will allow the phone to run as well or better at 1.2 than the RAZR will at 1.5 on gingerbread. using a lower clock speed will also improve battery life. that being said, the 1ghz stock processor in my thunderbolt can easily run at 2 ghz with no ill effects (other than murdering the battery), i can't wait to see what we can get that dual core 4460 up to.
 
be rest assured, this WILL get clocked to over 1.2. I bet 1.5 to 1.8 ranges when done. you will have to root of course, but it will happen for sure.

Battery Life is probably one of the main reasons it was underclocked.

from what i've heard the battery is average for a 4G device. If it gets OC'ed i'm sure it will have an impact on battery life.

You know someone will push it over 2 Ghz.... But we may not hear from them about a week after that once they've friend the processor :D

You can actually hold liquid nitrogen in your bare hand safely. It floats on a pocket of gaseous nitrogen between your warm skin and the liquid nitrogen. It would take a pretty bad spill to do any damage to the guy's hand.

77K or -196 C. The warmth of your skin prevents the liquid nitrogen from actually touching your skin, so you can actually hold a small amount in the palm of your hand for a while. You can even dip your hand into a container of it briefly (similar to dipping a wet hand into liquid lead). Now if you spill a large amount or hold it in your hand for too long, it will eventually cold burn you.

Better battery life I would say. Since it's stock speed is 1.5GHz I'd wager you'd be safe to overclock it if you want the extra 300MHz.
