Why not all chargers are the same!!!

It's funy, I have a CUSTOM Accessories 2-port USB adapter (from like, Wal-Mart or something). It supports 500 mA @ 5V on each port (supposedly). Normally, I use a USB y-adapter to draw the full 1A as I keep hoping it might speed up the charge (doesn't really at all). However, I can still charge it fine without needing the Y-adapter.

Not sure what the power requirement differences are, but I know I can't use that split charger to charge both my phone and my fiancee's MotoDroid at the same time. *ponders* I'm looking into the spec's now to see if I can tweak the circuit inside the adapter to give me a little more juice.

FYI-
your phone would like to use 1A draw in order to charge at the same speed as the wall charger it came with.

Unless the data pins short together with a 200Ohm load, then the phone will only pull 500mA no matter how many USB ports you hook it to at once. This is to protect computers from it overdrawing power and hurting the PC's circuitry.

Bottom line, your phone knows when it is plugged up to a PC and will not draw more than the 500mA a USB port is designed for. Chargers that can provide more and meet the new standard (data pins shorted with proper resistance) will allow it to charge faster.

I picked up some OEM Moto Droid car & wall charger sets from Amazon for ~$8 each. Here's an odd thing. The car charger (Model spn5400a) shows up as an AC charger on the Incredible, but the accompanying wall charger (Model spn 5334) shows up as a usb.

Both seem to do the job fine. If the car charger showing as an AC device means the Incredible will draw the full 950mA the car charger is rated for, perhaps those who are outstripping their present car chargers might look into this one.
Amazon.com: OEM Rapid Car Charger + OEM Home Travel Charger for…

Just a thought.

Cheers

Have you verified that the car charger charges your phone about as quick as a standard wall charger?

If you need a cheaper charger from a brick-and-mortar store, the wall charger for the Nook e-reader ($14.95 at Best Buy/Barnes & Noble) works great. Same two-piece style as the factory HTC charger, and shows up as AC charge on the DInc.

What's the current rating on it?

Found a Micro USB car charger at my local Fry's today for $3.99. Surprisingly it shows up as "AC charging" in battery info when plugged in. Must be giving the full allowable juice to charge.

Shipping is only $2. May not be the highest quality but it works.

Just to throw another monkey into the fray... I had a 1A car charger lying around that seems to work great except that it introduces a very loud squeal when I'm playing music through the Aux input. The squeal goes completely away when I unplug the power.

Why not just spend 2 minutes and $10 on Ebay and get an original HTC wall charger with a USB cord? I bought one and it's identical to the HTC adapter and cord that came out of my DI box! Cheap, easy, and WAY safer than soldering and trying to figure out why your phone charges so slowly. I searched OEM HTC TC U250 on Ebay and bought from Auctionwireless. I bought an extra because I have an inverter in my truck that will charge my husband's phone (or anything else) at the same time. We never have to buy phone maker specific car chargers that way and with the over-voltage protection and the fuses in the inverter, it's a lot safer for our expensive phones. I paid $18 for the inverter at Walmart.com and there are probably cheaper ones out there.

BTW, the search on Ebay will bring up a lot of EVO chargers. They are identical to our DI chargers.

because i can spend 5 minutes on amazon and get 3 chargers for the same price as the one you bought, have it delivered the next day and they work perfectly fine :)

Oh, good idea!! Let's all plug our $300 phones into a $3 charger that may or may not work because it's CHEAP. No thanks. If I have enough money to spend big bucks on a great smartphone, I should have $10 to spend on a OEM charger. AND if I can wait for three weeks to get the phone in the first place, I can wait for five days for an Ebay shipment from Florida to Oregon.

I'll take the safe way... :p

That will happen with most chargers and periphery devices that use a wired connection to transmit the audio signal into your car stereo (MP3 players, phones, laptops, etc).

Three solutions, any of which will work. First, go wireless with the data signal (bluetooth). Second, unplug it from the charger. Third, install what is known as a ground loop isolator.

They are blackberry OEM chargers actually, not cheap crap at all

If it's rated for 950mA and the Incredible says "AC", it will.

not necessarily...i have a monoprice charger that when i initially plug the phone in says AC. it then proceeds to charge EXTREMELY slowly, and finally after about an hour of being plugged in the phone will switch to USB. very strange...it gets the job done but i never could figure out why it does that...

I use the blackberry wall chargers too from amazon. Work great.

I am still looking for a 1A car charger though, my current one charges sooooooo sloowwwwww.

I'm going to order this one and see how it works:

hey, how are the chargers holding up? i am in the same situation, it seems that froyo has a slow charging rate, so I am using an old env2 charger plugged into my car's dc to ac adapter.

are any of the chargers still working well after a month?

My cheap monoprice charger and cables are holding up great. Been using them since I got the phone in April and haven't had any problems.

the $5 BB ones i bought still do just fine. Froyo does charge slower no matter what the source is though

I'm not using an Incredible, but I think this is an excellent thread about chargers and would like to pick all your brains for my question:

My phone(Samsung Galaxy 551)'s stock charger is rated for 5V 0.7A and I use that at home. I also have an old charger from my HP Business Messenger lying around. It's rated for 5V 1A and connects to the phone with a detachable mini USB cord.

If I wanted a spare charger for my office, is it safe to plug a micro USB cord into the old charger and use that?
